Abstract A unique technology for producing thermoplastic vulcanizate (TPV) has been developed using an intermeshing-type internal mixer (ITM). TPV produced by the ITM was compared with that produced using a co-rotating twin screw extruder (Co-TSE) to assess the former’s commercial possibilities. TPV, originating from ethylene-propylene-diene monomer (EPDM) and polypropylene (PP), was produced by both machines with equal filled volumes, same shear rate, and same specific mechanical energy. Results indicate that ITMs can be used to produce TPV with mechanical properties comparable to those of TPV produced by Co-TSE. TPV can be produced with a lower shear rate with ITM compared to Co-TSE. A long residence time can be maintained in the mixing chamber of the ITM, allowing high conversion of the cross-linking reaction and resulting in better elastic recovery properties due to the higher cross-linking density. However, this resulted in higher viscosity of TPV produced by ITM.

The modified poly (butylene succinate) (PBS), namely, PBS-g-MA and PBS-g-GMA were prepared in order to be used as a compatibilizer for PBS composites. The grafting of maleic anhydride (MA) or glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) onto PBS was carried out using a twin-screw extruder. The grafting reactions were confirmed by spectroscopic analysis. Comparing with MA, it was found that GMA can be effectively grafted on PBS. The PBS-g-GMA was successfully used for PBS composites to enhance thermal properties. Furthermore, it was found that the incorporation of compatibilizer increased the melt viscosity of PBS composites.

Maleic anhydride grafted natural rubber compatibilizer was prepared in molten state using twin screw extruder. Amount of maleic anhydride and initiator, as well as screw rotation were varied according to Box-Behnken experimental design. Titration of acid group from the anhydride function and FTIR spectra analysis were carried out as quantitative and qualitative analysis of grafted MA, respectively. The results showed that the percentages of grafted MA for all samples were ranged from 1.31 to 5.36%. The optimum conditions are predicted at 14.4 phr of MA level, 0.41 phr of BPO level, and 71 rpm screw rotation giving 5.39 ± 0.16% of grafted MA. FTIR spectra showed that the MA and carbonyl functional group were found in the compatibilizer suggested the presence of grafted MA and ring opening reaction.
