Feeling better or not: Adjusting affective style moderates the association between sleep duration and positive affect on next day

Abstract Introduction Sleep and affect are closely related. Late adolescence and emerging adulthood are associated with unique sleep patterns and risk for mood disturbances. This daily study examined whether dysfunctional beliefs and attitudes about sleep (DBAS), a modifiable cognitive vulnerability factor, moderated daily sleep-affect associations. Methods 421 community adolescents (n=205, 54.1% females, M±SDage=16.9±0.87) and emerging adults (n=216, 73.1% females, M±SDage=21.31±1.73) self-reported sleep and affect (adapted 12-item PANAS) and wore an actigraphy device for 7–28 days, providing >5000 daily observations. Linear mixed models tested whether DBAS moderated daily associations between self-reported and actigraphic sleep duration (total sleep time), sleep efficiency, and next-day affect on between and within-person levels. Both valence (positive/negative) and arousal (high/low) dimensions of affect were examined. Covariates included age, gender, ethnicity, day of week, and previous-day affect. Results DBAS significantly moderated associations between average sleep and next-day positive, but not negative, affect. Individuals with higher DBAS had significantly lower high arousal positive affect as average sleep duration (actigraphic: p=.002; self-reported: p=.014) and efficiency (actigraphic: p=.014) decreased. Similar moderation was found for average self-reported sleep duration and low arousal positive affect (p=.032). No significant results emerged on the within-person level. Previous-day affect significantly predicted next-day affect across models and outcomes (all p<.001). Discussion Adolescents and emerging adults with more negative views about sleep may experience dampened positive affect in shorter, or poorer, sleep periods. DBAS may constitute a modifiable factor increasing affective vulnerability on a global but not day-to-day level, and a therapeutic target for sleep-related affect disturbances in youths.

Affection is intertwined with sleep, yet how to adjust sleep duration to enhance subsequent affection remains unknown. Adjusting affective style, reflecting inter-individual differences in emotion regulation, was found to function in processes where sleep modulates our affective brain. Hence, this study examined whether and how it moderates the association between sleep duration and subsequent affection. An ambulatory assessment design was employed among 64 participants, wherein both within-person sleep duration and affects and between-person affective styles were measured. Multilevel moderation analysis and simple-slope analysis were applied to test our hypotheses. Results showed that adjusting affective style moderated the sleep-affection association. Specifically, sleep duration was positively associated with subsequent positive affects under higher adjusting affective style, whereas an opposite pattern was observed under lower adjusting affective style. However, such moderation wasn’t observed in associations between negative affection and sleep duration. This study uncovers the relationship between affection and sleep sufficiency. Specifically, longer sleep duration is a double-edged sword to positive affection, wherein the likelihood for individuals to benefit or suffer from it might count on their ability of emotion regulation. Additionally, negative affection cannot be improved simply by sleeping.

Abstract. Resting respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) is related to individual differences in waking affective style and self-regulation. However, little is known about the stability of RSA between sleep/wake stages or the relations between RSA during sleep and waking affective style. We examined resting RSA in 25 healthy undergraduates during the waking state and one night of sleep. Stability of cardiac variables across sleep/wake states was highly reliable within participants. As predicted, greater approach behavior and lower impulsivity were associated with higher RSA; these relations were evident in early night Non-REM (NREM) sleep, particularly in slow wave sleep (SWS). The current research extends previous findings by establishing stability of RSA within individuals between wake and sleep states, and by identifying SWS as an optimal period of measurement for relations between waking affective style and RSA.

Abstract. Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is associated with worry and emotion regulation difficulties. The contrast-avoidance model suggests that individuals with GAD use worry to regulate emotion: by worrying, they maintain a constant state of negative affect (NA), avoiding a feared sudden shift into NA. We tested an extension of this model to positive affect (PA). During a week-long ecological momentary assessment (EMA) period, 96 undergraduates with a GAD analog provided four daily measurements of worry, dampening (i.e., PA suppression), and PA. We hypothesized a time-lagged mediation relationship in which higher worry predicts later dampening, and dampening predicts subsequently lower PA. A lag-2 structural equation model was fit to the group-aggregated data and to each individual time-series to test this hypothesis. Although worry and PA were negatively correlated in 87 participants, our model was not supported at the nomothetic level. However, idiographically, our model was well-fit for about a third (38.5%) of participants. We then used automatic search as an idiographic exploratory procedure to detect other time-lagged relationships between these constructs. While 46 individuals exhibited some cross-lagged relationships, no clear pattern emerged across participants. An alternative hypothesis about the speed of the relationship between variables is discussed using contemporaneous correlations of worry, dampening, and PA. Findings suggest heterogeneity in the function of worry as a regulatory strategy, and the importance of temporal scale for detection of time-lagged effects.

Abstract. Metaphors often characterize prosocial actions and people as sweet. Three studies sought to explore whether conceptual metaphors of this type can provide insights into the prosocial trait of agreeableness and into daily life prosociality. Study 1 (n = 698) examined relationships between agreeableness and food taste preferences. Studies 2 (n = 66) and 3 (n = 132) utilized daily diary protocols. In Study 1, more agreeable people liked sweet foods to a greater extent. In Study 2, greater sweet food preferences predicted a stronger positive relationship between daily prosocial behaviors and positive affect, a pattern consistent with prosocial motivation. Finally, Study 3 found that daily prosocial feelings and behaviors varied positively with sweet food consumption in a manner that could not be ascribed to positive affect or self-control. Altogether, the findings encourage further efforts to extend conceptual metaphor theory to the domain of personality processes, in part by building on balance-related ideas.

Abstract. The current study investigated the associations of psychological resources, social comparisons, and temporal comparisons with general wellbeing. The sample included 142 community participants (47.9% men; age range 23–83 years), who compared themselves with others, and with their younger selves, on eight dimensions (e.g., physical health, resilience). They also completed questionnaires assessing psychological resources of mastery and self-esteem, and three components of subjective wellbeing: life satisfaction and negative and positive affect. The main results showed that high levels of psychological resources contributed to wellbeing, with self-enhancing social and temporal comparisons moderating the effects of resources on certain wellbeing components. Specifically, under low levels of mastery or self-esteem self-enhancing social or temporal comparisons were related to either higher life satisfaction or positive affect. The results highlight the role of resources and comparisons in promoting people’s wellbeing, and suggest that self-enhancing comparisons function as cognitive coping mechanisms when psychological resources are low.
