AbstractUtilization of ecological materials for appliances and products is one of the ways to achieve the goal of sustainability.Wood-polymer composites as a cheap, lightweight, durable and esthetic material has gained attention of scientists, engineers and consumers alike. Different kinds of polymeric matrices, plants used as the fillers, chemical of physical modifiers and processing technologies have already been widely studied. Nonetheless, surprisingly few information on Wood-Polymer Composites’ tribology can be found. This paper is an attempt to fill this gap. Polypropylene-and poly(lactic acid)-based composites with varying wood flour content have been analyzed. The Brinell’s hardness and coefficient of friction of the samples have been determined. In order to evaluate the influence of the moisture content on the tribological and mechanical properties of the composites, the samples have also been aged in water. The investigation revealed that polymeric composites filled with wood flour can present favorable coefficient of friction, compared to the neat resins. The results of our study can establish a good starting point for further investigation.

For the low weight and high strength, the microcellular extrusion foaming technology was applied in the preparation of polypropylene (PP)-based wood polymer composites, and the spherical cavity mixer was used to construct an experimental platform for the uniform dispersion of wood flour (WF). The effects of PP molecular configuration on the composite properties and cell morphology of samples were also investigated. The experimental results indicated that the application of a spherical cavity mixer with a cavity radius of 5 mm could effectively improve the mixing quality and avoid the agglomeration of WF. In addition, compared with the branched molecule, the linear molecule not only increased the melting temperature by about 10 °C, but also endowed composites with a higher complex viscosity at a shear rate lower than 100 s−1, which contributed to the cell morphology of more microporous samples.

This paper investigated the moisture and strength properties of wood-polymer composites (WPC), which were made using three different recycled polymers using wood flour as filler. The recycled polymers were acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), polypropylene (PP), and polyethylene (PE), which were collected from among the construction and demolition waste (CDW) at a local waste management center. The commercial additives, such as a coupling agent and lubricant, were also included in the materials. Composite materials were manufactured with an agglomeration and an extrusion process. Water absorption and thickness swelling properties of composites, based on the recycled ABS and PE, were restricted compared to the recycled PP. The strength properties of WPC were determined with two methods, a traditional Brinell hardness and resistance to indentation. Using an ABS polymer as a matrix in the composite, the moisture and strength properties were improved. The recycled PP polymer caused these properties to be lowered, especially in the case of moisture properties. This study has shown that the method used can affect the measured value of certain properties. In addition, the sorting of recycled polymer fractions is desirable for the appearance of improved properties.

The development of woodworking and furniture industry in the past twentieth century was largely due to the launch of the production of a large group of artificial materials, now classified as wood-polymer composites. Diversity and renewability of the resource base, convenience and cost-effectiveness of wood-polymer composites (WPC) are the main prerequisites for the development of this group of materials. Fillers in thermoplastic wood-polymer composites may be present in a variety of forms. At this stage industrial WPCs are manufactured mainly from small fractions - wood flour and sawdust. This provides a high technological plasticity of production, namely - the possibility of manufacturing products by extrusion and casting methods, a variety of geometric shapes and even with a small thickness of the walls of the structures. However, this is true if we focus on the maximum possible mechanical properties and accuracy of geometric shapes of finished products. If we focus production on the manufacture of sound-proofing WPC, then almost any wood waste can be used for the filling of such composites. To study and predict sound-proofing properties of wood polymer-sand composite (WPSC), a corresponding mathematical model was developed. It is found that with an increase in the thickness of the polymer-sand coating, the coefficient of sound proof significantly increases. For example, a coating thickness of only 4 mm, increases the sound-proofing properties of a wood sample from 16 to 35 dB, thus the sound-proofing properties of the WPSC are improved by half compared to pure wood.

The work demonstrates selected results of the investigations on surface properties and wear resistance of polypropylene based wood-polymer composites (WPC) reinforced with wood flour. WPC are broadly applied in construction and automotive sectors, where mechanical, thermal as well as moisture absorbing characteristics are of great importance. In order to get information about wear resistance of such composites Taber wear test is applied. Surface properties are investigated before and after tribological test. Contact angle values of the investigated compositions are compared after different wear periods (0, 2000, 5000 and 10000 cycles) with abrasives H22 and CS17.

Most applications expose the materials to wide range of temperatures, which may influence on thermal behavior of materials. Thermal degradation of wood polymer composites (WPCs) is a crucial aspect for application and manufacturing process of these products. In this research, wood polymer composites with different nanoclay contents were prepared by melts compounding method. The amount of wood flour and coupling agent were fixed at 40% and 10% wt% (total weight), respectively, and the different levels of nanoclay include 0, 3 and 5% wt% were used in preparing the composites. Thermal properties of nanocomposites were characterized by Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). The DSC analyses show that the crystallization temperature (Tc), enthalpy ΔHm, and the degree of crystallinity (Xc) of the nanocomposites were increased by addition of nanoclay. The TGA results indicate that by increasing the nanoclay percentage the degradation temperatures and thermal stability was enhanced.

The materials based on wood-polymer composites (WPC) in the form of decking boards are produced, in which wood filler is partially replaced by mineral one. WPC materials manufactured by Savewood using a matrix polymer of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) have good mechanical properties, low abrasion and satisfactory resistance to climatic influences. However, they have relatively high water absorption, the task of reducing which is relevant not only in Russia, but also in other countries where there are constructions of facilities operating in outdoor environmental conditions. The modification of such materials in this work was carried out by replacing part of the wood filler with the mineral filler, which is CaCO3 (chalk). Partial replacement of wood flour with mineral filler resulted in a marked reduction in swelling from 1.25 to 0.01%. In this case, the modulus of elasticity is increased from 2260 to 2880 MPa, tensile strength from 30.5 to values of 16.7 ÷ 32 MPa. The specific impact strength varies from 8.90 to 7.74 kJ/m2. The optimal ratio of wood and mineral fillers is 60/40%.
