Influence of lubricants such as montan waxes and fatty acid esters, on properties of glass fiber reinforced composites based on polyamide 1010. Composites with 40 % wt. glass fibers were obtained on twin-screw extruder, while the fiber breakage occur. Fiber length distribution were measured. It is shown, that adding of 0.5 % wt. of lubricants increase content of glass fibers longer than 2 critical length and improve mechanical properties.

During an injection molding of composite materials, fiber attrition occurs and the average fiber length is reduced. In order to control the breakage of fibers and degradation of mechanical properties during processing, Flat glass Fiber (FF), that has oval cross-section shape, has been developed to use for glass fiber reinforced thermoplastic (GFRTP). Using FF as reinforcement of GFRTP has advantages as following: (1) Fluidity of FF is better than conventional Normal glass Fiber (NF) with 'circular' cross-section; (2) Fiber breakage during the injection molding process using FF is smaller than that using NF. In this study, the mechanical properties of FF and NF were compared for reinforcement of long fiber thermoplastics pellets (LFT pellets). We have also investigated the effect of screw design on fiber damage and the mechanical properties. The mechanical properties of specimens molded by FF reinforcement LFT (FF-LFT) pellets were superior to these of NF reinforcement LFT (NF-LFT) pellets. The former could give composites with higher fluidity and longer residual fiber length. Moreover, FF was able to strengthen injection-molded samples with higher fiber content than NF. Low shear type screw was effective to prevent the fiber attrition during plasticization process, hence leads to better mechanical properties of GFRTP

This article aims to investigate the effect of dispersion and uniformity of fiber length distribution on the rheological and mechanical behavior of polypropylene reinforced with short glass fiber. The composites were prepared through melt compounding with three various glass fiber concentrations using a twin-screw extruder. Multiple extrusion processing was used to alter and manipulate the fibers’ length inside the composites. The fiber length distribution was analyzed via the photomicrograph technique. Rheological measurements indicated that the molten samples were visco-plastic fluids and the Herschel–Bulkley model is the best model for fitting on the rheological behavior diagram. Variables of the fitted model are noticeably altered by the fiber length distribution. Moreover, rheological assessments revealed that the non-Newtonian behavior of the molten composites significantly diminished after the second extrusion processing, while it did not have much effect on the fiber length reduction. In the second phase, tensile and flexural properties were determined to detect the mechanical properties. The results indicated that the tensile strength of the composite has a direct relation with the fiber length distribution factor while the flexural strength is independent of fiber length. Furthermore, the highest tensile and flexural strength attained from the composite containing the highest fiber volume fraction.
