The 21st International Society of Hypertension in Pregnancy (ISSHP) meeting was held in São Paulo, Brazil from 23 to 26 October 2016. The discourse at this Congress brought global maternal health into the foray among basic science and clinical research. In concordance with the United Nations sustainable development goals which warrant an integrated view to health with investments in adolescence and childhood, the research at Congress focussed on a ‘life course’ approach to maternal health – examining intergenerational effects of maternal obesity and hypertension on the behavioral and physical developments of infants. Bringing in research from the Global South highlighted inequities in treatment and management of women with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, in addition to the challenges in adoption of recommendations generated in Global North. The evidence shared can serve as platform for further discourse on global maternal health and in generating accountability to close the ‘evidence to policy’ gap.

Abstract 44 Purpose: Globally, nurses caring for children and adolescents with cancer work in diverse practice settings. Nurses in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) are challenged by the limited scope of their professional practice, resources and education. Opportunities for education, networking and professional growth inspire and empower nurses to improve the care of patients and families. Nurses are key members of the International Society of Paediatric Oncology (SIOP), which provides ongoing professional development. In 2010, the SIOP Pediatric Oncology in Developing Countries Committee's Nursing Working Group was formed to support and learn from nurses working in LMIC. Methods: Utilizing the Cure4Kids website from St Jude, the group holds monthly business and educational meetings and continues to network and collaborate on numerous projects. PODC Nursing Working Group recently published baseline standards for pediatric oncology nursing care in LMIC. A survey will now assess the implementation of baseline standards. LMIC nurses are being mentored to write abstracts and grants to increase global recognition of their work. In addition, an education repository of teaching materials is being established. Summary: The PODC Nursing Working Group and project groups are well established and achieving project deadlines. Educational programs including topics on abandonment, nursing in LMIC and abstracts have been well received by both nurses and physicians from LMIC and HIC. Challenges have included internet connectivity and scheduling meetings during daylight hours across the multiple time zones. Following the launch of monthly meetings in late 2015, our membership has increased by 20% from 61 to 76 members from 29 countries. Conclusions: The SIOP PODC Nursing Group has created a sustainable nursing community and continues to work collaboratively beyond the annual conference. The compassion and commitment to support patients and their families by providing the best care possible is the common thread for pediatric oncology nurses. Objetivos: Avaliar o perfil clínico e laboratorial de crianças e adolescentes com diabetes mellitus tipo 1 (DM1) e relacionar a adesão ao tratamento com os valores da hemoglobina glicada (HbA1c). Métodos: Foi realizada análise do prontuário de 56 pacientes (2 a 17 anos) atendidos no ambulatório de endocrinologia pediátrica do Conjunto Hospitalar de Sorocaba, durante o período de agosto de 2013 a julho de 2014. Dados como idade, duração da doença, etiologia do diabetes (autoimune ou idiopático), tipo e número de aplicações diárias de insulina, rodízio no local de aplicação, valor de HbA1c, monitorização da glicemia capilar, ingestão de doces e refrigerantes e prática de atividade física foram avaliados. Para a análise estatística, admitiram-se dois grupos: mau controle = HbA1c>9%; e bom controle = HbA1c≤9%, de acordo com a International Society of Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes (ISPAD). Resultados: A idade média do grupo foi igual a 10,5 anos: com 53,6% (n=30) dos pacientes em estado de cetoacidose diabética ao diagnóstico e 57,1% (n=32) deles com valor de HbA1c>9% no momento do estudo. O grupo de mau controle mostrou maiores idades, sendo composto principalmente por adolescentes (p=0,0230). A ingestão semanal de refrigerante foi associada ao grupo de mau controle (p=0,0500). Os demais fatores estudados não mostraram diferença estatística em relação aos grupos. Conclusões: Um grande percentual de pacientes com DM1 apresentou controle inadequado da doença, principalmente na faixa etária adolescente. O diagnóstico do DM1 na infância e na adolescência ainda é tardio, com elevada presença de cetoacidose diabética ao diagnóstico.

This report summarizes the scientific content and activities of the second edition of the Brazilian Student Council Symposium organized by the Regional Student Group Brazil (RSG-Brazil), a branch of the International Society for Computational Biology (ISCB). The event were held preceding the thirteen AB3C Conference (13th X-meeting 2017) in São Pedro, São Paulo, Brazil, on October 4, 2017. The 2nd BR-SCS was attended by 78 delegates from all student level (undergraduate, graduate and post-docs students) and consisted of two keynote presentations, eight students oral presentations and 15 posters presentation.
