This paper provides a brief review of the analytical and numerical developments related to unsteady boundary-layer separation, in particular as it relates to vortex-induced flows, leading up to our present understanding of this important feature in high-Reynolds-number, surface-bounded flows in the presence of an adverse pressure gradient. In large part, vortex-induced separation has been the catalyst for pulling together the theory, numerics and applications of unsteady separation. Particular attention is given to the role that Prof. Frank T. Smith, FRS, has played in these developments over the course of the past 35 years. The following points will be emphasized: (i) unsteady separation plays a pivotal role in a wide variety of high-Reynolds-number flows, (ii) asymptotic methods have been instrumental in elucidating the physics of both steady and unsteady separation, (iii) Frank T. Smith has served as a catalyst in the application of asymptotic methods to high-Reynolds-number flows, and (iv) there is still much work to do in articulating a complete theoretical understanding of unsteady boundary-layer separation.

Many flows of practical interest occur at high Reynolds number, at which the flow in most of the boundary layer is turbulent, showing apparently random fluctuations in velocity across a wide range of scales. The range of scales over which these fluctuations occur increases with the Reynolds number and hence high Reynolds number flows are difficult to compute or predict. In this paper, we discuss the structure of these flows and describe a physical model, based on the attached eddy hypothesis, which makes predictions for the statistical properties of these flows and their variation with Reynolds number. The predictions are shown to compare well with the results from recent experiments in a new purpose-built high Reynolds number facility. The model is also shown to provide a clear physical explanation for the trends in the data. The limits of applicability of the model are also discussed.

Immersed methods are considered as a class of nonboundary-fitted meshing technique for simulating fluid–structure interactions. However, the conventional approach of coupling the fluid and solid domains, as in the immersed boundary method and the immersed finite element method, often cannot handle high Reynolds number flows interacting with moving and deformable solids. As the solid dynamics is imposed by the fluid dynamics, it often leads to unrealistically large deformation of the solid in cases of high Reynolds number flows. The first attempt in resolving this issue was proposed in the modified immersed finite element method (mIFEM), however, some terms were determined heuristically. In this paper, we provide a full and rigorous derivation for the mIFEM with corrections to the previously proposed terms, which further extends the accuracy of the algorithm. In the “swapped” coupling logic, we solve for the dynamics of the solid, and then numerically impose it to the background fluid, which allows the solid to control its own dynamics and governing laws instead of following that of the fluid. A few examples including a biomedical engineering application are shown to demonstrate the capability in handling large Reynolds number flows using the derived mIFEM.

This paper reports on the characterization of the custom-designed high-Reynolds number recirculating water tunnel located at Oklahoma State University. The characterization includes the verification of the test section design, pump calibration and the velocity distribution within the test section. This includes an assessment of the boundary layer growth within the test section. The tunnel was designed to achieve a downstream distance based Reynolds number of 10 million, provide optical access for flow visualization and minimize inlet flow non-uniformity. The test section is 1 m long with 15.2 cm (6-inch) square cross section and acrylic walls to allow direct line of sight at the tunnel walls. The verification of the test section design was accomplished by comparing the flow quality at different location downstream of the flow inlet. The pump was calibrated with the freestream velocity with three pump frequencies and velocity profiles were measured at defined locations for three pump speeds. Boundary layer thicknesses were measured from velocity profile results and compared with analytical calculations. These measurements were also compared against the facility design calculations.

Wall turbulence is a ubiquitous phenomenon in nature and engineering applications, yet predicting such turbulence is difficult due to its complexity. High-Reynolds-number turbulence arises in most practical flows, and is particularly complicated because of its wide range of scales. Although the attached-eddy hypothesis postulated by Townsend can be used to predict turbulence intensities and serves as a unified theory for the asymptotic behaviours of turbulence, the presence of coherent structures that contribute to the logarithmic behaviours has not been observed in instantaneous flow fields. Here, we demonstrate the logarithmic region of the turbulence intensity by identifying wall-attached structures of the velocity fluctuations ($u_{i}$) through the direct numerical simulation of a moderate-Reynolds-number boundary layer ($Re_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}}\approx 1000$). The wall-attached structures are self-similar with respect to their heights ($l_{y}$), and in particular the population density of the streamwise component ($u$) scales inversely with $l_{y}$, reminiscent of the hierarchy of attached eddies. The turbulence intensities contained within the wall-parallel components ($u$ and $w$) exhibit the logarithmic behaviour. The tall attached structures ($l_{y}^{+}>100$) of $u$ are composed of multiple uniform momentum zones (UMZs) with long streamwise extents, whereas those of the cross-stream components ($v$ and $w$) are relatively short with a comparable width, suggesting the presence of tall vortical structures associated with multiple UMZs. The magnitude of the near-wall peak observed in the streamwise turbulent intensity increases with increasing $l_{y}$, reflecting the nested hierarchies of the attached $u$ structures. These findings suggest that the identified structures are prime candidates for Townsend’s attached-eddy hypothesis and that they can serve as cornerstones for understanding the multiscale phenomena of high-Reynolds-number boundary layers.
