In this study, a vacuum and surcharge combined one-dimensional consolidation model is developed. Terzaghi's consolidation theory is revisited by applying the initial and boundary conditions corresponding to combined vacuum and surcharge loading on a soil. A test apparatus is designed, manufactured, and assembled to verify the model. The apparatus has the capacity of applying designated vacuum and surcharge pressures to a soil specimen, and it allows for the measurement of the excess pore-water pressure, settlement, and volume change during the consolidation process. Two series of tests are performed using the apparatus on two reconstituted natural clay soils, namely, the Welland sediment at water contents close to its liquid limit and the Orleans clay, reconstituted and consolidated under an effective stress of 60 kPa. The former test series mimics the strengthening of a very soft soil, such as the hydraulic fill used in land reclamation. The latter test series is designed to study vacuum–surcharge combined strengthening of a consolidated soil. It is demonstrated from the experiments that the one-dimensional vacuum-surcharge consolidation model describes the consolidation behaviour of both soils well. The consolidation characteristics of the soils show no discrimination against the nature of the consolidation pressure, namely, whether they are consolidated under the vacuum pressure alone, under the surcharge pressure alone, or under a pressure generated by the combined application of vacuum and surcharge. The study concluded that the soil consolidation characteristics obtained from the conventional consolidation tests can be used in the design of vacuum preloading systems, provided that the one-dimensional loading condition prevails.Key words: consolidation, soil improvement, vacuum pressure, surcharge pressure, excess pore-water pressure, soil consolidation parameters.

AbstractThe dimensionless groups that govern the Davis and Raymond non-linear consolidation model, and its extended versions resulting from eliminating several restrictive hypotheses, were deduced. By means of the governing equations nondimensionalization technique and introducing the characteristic time concept, both in terms of settlement and pressures, was obtained (for the most general model) that the average degree of settlement only depends on the dimensionless time while the average degree of pressure dissipation does it, additionally, on the loading ratio. These results allowed the construction of universal curves expressing the solutions of the unknowns of interest in a direct and simple way.

The coefficient of consolidation is traditionally considered as a constant value in soil consolidation calculations. This paper uses compression and recompression indexes to calculate the solution-dependent nonlinear compressibility, thus overconsolidation and normal consolidation are separated during the calculations. Moreover, the complex nonlinear consolidation can be described using the nonlinear compressibility and a nonlinear permeability. Then, the finite element discrete equation with consideration of the time-dependent load is derived, and a corresponding program is developed. Subsequently, a case history is conducted for verifying the proposed method and the program. The results show that the method is sufficiently accurate, indicating the necessity of considering nonlinearity for consolidation calculations. Finally, three cases are compared to reveal the importance of separating the overconsolidation and normal consolidation. Overall, this study concluded that it is inadequate to consider just one consolidation status in calculations, and that the proposed method is more reasonable for guiding construction.

In order to study whether foundation pit is stable or not after excavation, the article adopted the Duncan E-B model to make static analysis for the excavation scheme which considering the soil consolidation settlement and to make dynamic analysis under the action of earthquake wave of EL Centro. To make a slope stability of foundation pit analysis by calculating static and dynamic boundary conditions which further coupled with the Newmark method. The main study is the foundation settlement and earth-rock dams, slope stability of foundation pit conditions that considering unsaturated zone seepage conditions of earth-rock dams after the excavation. The results indicated that: in the static & dynamic analysis, the distribution about settlement is reasonable, earth-rock dam and foundation pit slope is in the steady state, the excavation scheme is reasonable and feasible.
