DW 2021 Demonstrates Promising Direct‐View Display Technologies and Materials

AbstractThe laparoscopic splenectomy in pediatric patients is performed worldwide but often the disproportion between size of patients and size of organs requires an extra laparotomic access for spleen removal. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the Alexis® system to retrieve the spleen without additional laparotomic access. The charts of all patients who underwent splenectomy at our center during the last 5 years were retrieved. In all the cases the Alexis® system was placed in the umbilicus, thru which a 10 mm camera was inserted. Three additional 5 mm standard trocars were inserted. Seven patients, affected by spherocytosis (3), epidermoid cyst (2), idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (2) and thalassemia (1), underwent laparoscopic splenectomy at a median age of 10 years (range: 8–17). Median patients’ weight was 32.5 kg (range: 25–71) and spleen size 15 cm (11–18). In all the cases, upon removal of the camera, the retrieval bag was inserted thru the umbilicus under direct view, the spleen retrieved, morcellated, and removed. No conversion nor enlargement of one of the ports nor an extra laparotomic access were required. The patients were discharged on the fifth post-operative day and the cosmetic results were excellent. Removal of the spleen can be safely performed without any additional laparotomy thru the Alexis® system placed in the umbilicus. This system is effective also in case of major patient/organ size disproportion and the final cosmetic aspect is excellent.

Abstract Magnetic position sensors are popular in industrial and automotive applications since they are robust, resistant to dust and oil and they can be cheap. However, precise magnetic position sensors can achieve 0.015 % accuracy and 10 nm resolution. The maximum achievable range is about 20 m. DC magnetic position sensors are using a permanent magnet as a field source. As a field sensor, magnetoresistors are often used instead of traditional Hall sensors. Eddy current sensors work also with non-magnetic conduction targets. Magnetostrictive sensors are based on the time-of-flight of the elastic wave excited in the magnetostrictive material. The sensors can be several meters long and their applications range from level meters to hydraulics. Magnetic trackers and long-range position sensors utilize AC field sources, which are detectable from distances up to 20 m. Compared to optical instruments magnetic trackers do not need direct view. Their applications include surgery, mixed reality, and underground and underwater navigation.

German director Frank Castorf and his designer Bert Neumann have created a series of productions that have altered the dramaturgy of visual space. Their scenography integrates stage space with other spaces mediated by technology and interlocks taped and/or live mediated images with live performance. Castorf exposes spaces hidden from the audience's direct view to address the question of what ‘truth’ inheres in an image. The philosopher Boris Groys has called this spatial dramaturgy ‘submedial space’. I flesh out Groy's concept with reference to the writings of Walter Benjamin and analyse how Castorf and Neumann create such spaces through performance strategies that blend live and mediated elements. Using Castorf's productions of Final Destination America (2000) and Forever Young (2003) at the Volksbühne Berlin as examples, I argue that the multilayered images and complex spatial configurations thereby created effectively serve Castorf's purposes of political critique.
