Abstract A compact 4-port ultra-wide band (UWB) multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) slot antenna with dual polarization is presented. The key features of antenna are: has directive radiation in two planes and low correlation without use of additional decoupling structure. The antenna contains four microstrip feedlines having circular patches backed by stepped circular slots. Orthogonal arrangement of each slot antenna increases compactness with polarization diversity and good isolation. The antenna has compact size of 36×36×0.8 mm3. It operates in the frequency band of 3.1 to 11.9 GHz and isolation is better than 15 dB. The superior diversity performance is ensured by calculating envelope correlation coefficient (ECC) and diversity gain. In addition to guarantee distortion less transmission in UWB group delay is also measured.

In this paper, the systematic design of a multiple antenna system for 5G smartphone operating at 3.5 GHz for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) operation in smartphones is proposed. The smartphone is preferred to be lightweight, thin, and attractive, and as a result metal casings have become popular. Using conventional antennas, such as a patch antenna, Inverted-F antennas, or monopole, in proximity to metal casing leads to decreasing its total efficiency and bandwidth. Therefore, a slot antenna embedded in the metal casing can be helpful, with good performance regarding bandwidth and total efficiency. The proposed multiple antenna system adopted the unit open-end slot antenna fed by Inverted-L microstrip with tuning stub. The measured S-parameters results agree fairly with the numerical results. It attains 200 MHz bandwidth at 3.5 GHz with ports isolation of (≤−13 dB) for any two antennas of the system. The influence of the customer’s hand for the proposed multiple antenna system is also considered, and the MIMO channel capacity is computed. The maximum achievable MIMO channel capacity based on the measured result is 31.25 bps/Hz and is about 2.7 times of 2 × 2 MIMO operation.

A compact high isolation ultrawideband (UWB) multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) antenna is designed. The proposed MIMO antenna consists of a rectangular monopole antenna and a slot antenna fed by two microstrip lines, respectively. To improve the impedance matching, a circular coupling structure is designed to feed the tapered slot antenna. The parasitic resonance introduced by the ground stub helps to extend the impedance bandwidth of monopole antenna at the upper UWB band. Commonly used complex decoupling or coupling structures are eliminated that endow the proposed antenna minimized foot print, which is preferred in mobile handset. Although without decoupling structure, high isolation is obtained between two antenna elements. Simulation and measurement verify the antenna’s desirable performance, showing a broad impedance bandwidth of 3.1–10.6 GHz with |S11| < −10 dB and |S21| < −20 dB over 3.4–10.6 GHz, and |S21| < −18 dB from 3.1–3.4 GHz.

Two new designs of the L-shaped Planar Inverted–F Antenna (PIFA) antennas with single and dual polarization operating at the frequency band for IEEE 802.11b/g standard with satisfactory radiation characteristics are presented. We further propose a genetic algorithm (GA) embedded in CST Microwave Studio for optimizing these antenna parameters. The agreement of simulation and measurement results shows the performance of our joint model. Also, they show that our dual-polarization antenna is suitable for indoor Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) wireless environment applications.
