This paper proposes a reverberation chamber structure consisting of new reflectors and mode stirrers for electromagnetic compatibility and wireless terminal measurements. The key design considerations for them are determined through a reasonable approach to analyze the eigenmode for a reverberation chamber and the standard deviation of its working volume based on 3D simulation. The final designs are expected to improve the standard deviation performance of the initial structure of the reverberation chamber and provide a better mode stirring environment. The results measured in the fabricated chamber demonstrate that these predictions are clearly realized. The results satisfy the main requirements of this paper, which are defined in consideration of the specifications of commercial reverberation chamber products. Therefore, the reverberation chamber of this paper is expected to be useful for performance measurement and evaluation of commercial wireless terminals. To verify this logical approach to obtain a good design and its results, the results measured in the actual fabricated reverberation chamber are described along with analytical and computational results.

We investigate the whole-body average specific absorption rate (WBA-SAR) of rats under various plane wave exposure characteristics, including different polarizations, incidence angles, distances between rats, and total number of rats. Unlike many other studies, we start our SAR analysis from one rat and expand it to 27 rats facing random directions in a three-dimensional area. In a one-rat analysis, we examine how the incidence direction and polarization affect the SAR of a single rat. Moreover, we look into how various incidence polarizations behave differently after they are transmited through a rat, the information of which is then used to analyze the effect of spacing among 27 randomly arranged rats. Next, we analyze the effect on spacing of the 27 rats deployed under a 52-plane-wave exposure, which is introduced to mimic a realistic reverberation chamber (RC) environment. We show the deviation in WBA-SAR according to the distance between rats, which provides guidelines for selecting the appropriate rat distance based on the number of animals and the exposure deviation within a limited working volume in an RC for large-scale experiments.

This paper presents an optimization of a method to reconstruct the radiated emissions of an equipment under test by the measurement of the electric field samples collected on the walls of a reverberation chamber. This means that only the orthogonal component of the electric field is necessary to obtain the radiative behavior of the device in free space conditions. The use of the equivalence principle allows one to reduce the number of equivalent sources used to reconstruct the radiation of the device. In fact, in the previous version of the method, the sources are placed into the entirety of working volume of the reverberation chamber. In the current version of the method, only the surface surrounding the equipment under test is discretized. The analytical implementation of the method is proposed for a particular stirring action: the multiple monopole source stirring technique. This technique is based on an array of monopoles placed onto the walls of the cavity, and therefore no further hardware is needed for the reconstruction of the radiated emissions. The method is experimentally validated in a real scenario.

A mode-stirred reverberation chamber (RC) is nowadays a commonly accepted performing tool for over-the-air (OTA) communication system evaluation, and their standardization is underway. Before performing active measurements of wireless communication systems using an RC, field uniformity inside the RC working volume has to be measured following the calibration method described in IEC standards 61000-4-21 and 61000-4-3, which requires 24 calibration measurements of field amplitude. In this contribution, we present the statistical laws that describe electromagnetic field maxima distribution, and based on them, a novel expression that could be useful to obtain a lower limit for the number of stirrer positions required at least to obtain a specific value for the normalized dispersion used to evaluate field uniformity with the IEC calibration method, being therefore of particular interest for OTA measurements.

The insertion of implanted venous access systems for children undergoing prolonged courses of chemotherapy has become a common procedure in pediatric surgical oncology. While not permanently implanted, the devices are expected to remain functional until cure of the primary disease is assured. Despite careful patient selection and standardised insertion and access techniques, some devices fail. The most commonly encountered problems are colonisation of the device with bacteria and catheter occlusion. Both of these difficulties relate to the development of a biofilm within the port and catheter. The morphology and evolution of biofilms in indwelling vascular catheters is the subject of ongoing investigation. To date, however, such investigations have been confined to the examination of fragments of biofilm scraped or sonicated from sections of catheter. This report describes a novel method for the extraction of intact biofilms from indwelling catheters.15 children with Wilm’s tumour and who had received venous implants were studied. Catheters were removed because of infection (n=6) or electively at the end of chemotherapy.
