Penelitian studi tentang Metamaterials (MTMs) dalam beberapa tahun terakhir telah meningkat sangat pesat. Metamaterials yang di sebut juga artificial material atau  Left Handed (LH) material adalah material yang tidak ada dialam dimana strukturnya direkayasa oleh manusia yang memiliki dua atau lebih properties yang khusus, misalkan pada Double Negative (DNG) material yang memiliki μ negative dan  ε negative. Beberapa pendekatan dalam mendesign metamaterial yaitu pendekatan resonant dan pendekatan Transmission line. Model transmision line yang pertama adalah Right Handed Transmission lines (RH TL) yang dimodelkan dalam sebuah unit sel sebagai rangkaian dan shunt kapasitor shunt(CR), yang kedua adalah Left Handed Transmission Line (LH TL) dimodelkan dalam sebuah unit sel sebagai rangkaian kapasitor seri(CL) dan induktansi shunt(LL). gabungan dari dua buah model transmission line ini disebut Composite Right-left Handed Transmission Line(CRLH TL)  dan ini menjadi dasar dalam mendesign metamaterial. CRLH transmission line dimodelkan dalam sebuah unit sel sebagai rangkaian kapasitor seri(CL), induktansi seri(LR) dan induktansi shunt (LL) serta induktansi shunt(LL). CRLH TL memiliki negatif, nol dankonstanta propagasi positif sesuai dengan karakteristik dari permitivitas efektif dan permeabilitas[1]. Hasil pengukuran bandpass filter menggunakan saluran transmisi CRLH satu sel menunjukkan frekuensi cutoff pada -10dB terletak pada frekuensi 3.016 GHz pada highpass filter dan 5.359GHz pada lowpass filternya. Sedangkan frekuensi 3.4 GHz terletak pada -4.8415 dB sedangkan frekuensi 4.8 Ghz terletak pada -4.753 dB. Hasil dari perancangan menunjukkan bahwa saluran transmisi CRLH satu sel dapat memenuhi spesifikasi yang diminta.

A wide-band microstrip bandpass filter (BPF) based on the improved composite right/left-handed transmission line (CRLH-TL) structure is presented in this paper. Compared to the traditional CRLH-TL with via hole, the improved one is an all-planar structure, which owns the advantage of fabrication and loss. The equivalent lossless LC circuit model of the proposed structure is established. EM software Sonnet is adopted to design the wide-band filter with bandwidth of 1.4 GHz (from 1.9 GHz to 3.3 GHz). The circuit occupies only 20.6 × 12.8 mm2. Finally, the fabrication and measurement are implemented. A good agreement between simulation and measured results verifies the validity of the design methodology.

AbstractIn this paper, parallel coupled meander lines (PCML) composite right/left-handed transmission line (CRLH-TL) based symmetrical quasi-0 dB coupled-line coupler is presented. Proposed coupler shows measured backward wave coupling level of 0.81 dB at frequency of 6.17 GHz with 3 dB fractional bandwidth (FBW) of 12.64%. Throughout the 3 dB frequency range (5.78–6.56 GHz), isolation and insertion loss of the coupler is better than 24 dB. Overall size of the proposed coupler is 19.6 × 12.1 mm. An equivalent lumped LC circuit model of the coupler is demonstrated. Measured results of the coupler show good agreement with the electromagnetic (EM) simulated and lumped LC circuit model simulated results, which validates proposed coupler design and its performance.

In this paper, an Ultra-wide-band (UWB) filter based on composite right/left handed transmission line (CRLH TL) is presented. The structure of the proposed band-pass filter is quite simple, of which the size is 0.5cm×1.5cm. Left-handed capacitor is obtained by couple of microstrip lines, and Left-handed inductance is obtained by the grounded stub. The simulated results indicate that the pass band of UWB filter is 3.4-11GHz, the insertion loss is less than 1 dB and the return loss is smaller than -12.5dB. The performance of UWB filter could meet the requirement of UWB communication systems.
