Uniqueness Of The Solution

A thin micropolar fluid with new boundary conditions at the fluid-solid interface, linking the velocity and the microrotation by introducing a so-called "boundary viscosity" is presented. The existence and uniqueness of the solution is proved and, by way of asymptotic analysis, a generalized micropolar Reynolds equation is derived. Numerical results show the influence of the new boundary conditions for the load and the friction coefficient. Comparisons are made with other works retaining a no slip boundary condition.

The present analysis represents the MHD flow of micropolar fluid past an oscillating infinite vertical plate embedded in porous media. At the plate, free convections are caused due to the differences in temperature and concentration. Therefore, the combined effect of radiative heat and mass transfer is taken into account. Partial differential equations are used in the mathematical formulation of a micropolar fluid. The system of dimensional governing equations is reduced to dimensionless form by means of dimensional analysis. The Laplace transform technique is applied to obtain the exact solutions for velocity, temperature, and concentration. In order to highlight the flow behavior, numerical computation and graphical illustration are carried out. Furthermore, the corresponding skin friction and wall couple stress are calculated.

Abstract Mathematical modeling of phase change process in porous media can help ensure the efficient design and operation of thermal energy storage and pipe freezing. Numerical methods generally require high computational power to be applicable in practice. Therefore, it is of great interest to develop accurate and reliable analytical frameworks. This study proposes a singular perturbation solution for a two-phase Stefan problem that describes outward solidification in a finite annular space. The problem solves cylindrical heat conduction equations for both solid and liquid phases, with consideration of a moving boundary condition. Perturbation method takes the advantages of small Stefan number as the perturbation parameter, which intrinsically occurs in porous media. Furthermore, a boundary-fixing technique is used to remove nonlinearity in the moving boundary condition. Two different time scales are separately expanded and evaluated to facilitate the construction of a composite asymptotic solution. The analytical solution is verified against a general numerical model using enthalpy method and local volume-averaged thermal properties. The results indicate that the temperature profile of both phases can be well modeled by singular perturbation theory. The analytical solution is found to have similar conclusions to the numerical analysis with much lesser computational cost.

Modeling flow and transport in fractured porous media has been a topic of intensive research for a number of energy- and environment-related industries. The presence of multiscale fractures makes it an extremely challenging task to resolve accurately and efficiently the flow dynamics at both the local and global scales. To tackle this challenge, we developed a computational workflow that adopts a two-level hierarchical strategy based on fracture length partitioning. This was achieved by specifying a partition length to split the discrete fracture network (DFN) into small-scale fractures and large-scale fractures. Flow-based numerical upscaling was then employed to homogenize the small-scale fractures and the porous matrix into an equivalent/effective single medium, whereas the large-scale fractures were modeled explicitly. As the effective medium properties can be fully tensorial, the developed hierarchical framework constructed the discrete systems for the explicit fracture–matrix sub-domains using the nonlinear two-point flux approximation (NTPFA) scheme. This led to a significant reduction of grid orientation effects, thus developing a robust, applicable, and field-relevant framework. To assess the efficacy of the proposed hierarchical workflow, several numerical simulations were carried out to systematically analyze the effects of the homogenized explicit cutoff length scale, as well as the fracture length and orientation distributions. The effect of different boundary conditions, namely, the constant pressure drop boundary condition and the linear pressure boundary condition, for the numerical upscaling on the accuracy of the workflow was investigated. The results show that when the partition length is much larger than the characteristic length of the grid block, and when the DFN has a predominant orientation that is often the case in practical simulations, the workflow employing linear pressure boundary conditions for numerical upscaling give closer results to the full-model reference solutions. Our findings shed new light on the development of meaningful computational frameworks for highly fractured, heterogeneous geological media where fractures are present at multiple scales.

The model developed in our previous paper (Nield and Kuznetsov, 2011, “The Effect of Vertical Throughflow on Thermal Instability in a Porous Medium Layer Saturated by a Nanofluid,” Transp. Porous Media, 87(3), pp. 765–775) is now revised to accommodate a more realistic boundary condition on the nanoparticle volume fraction. The new boundary condition postulates zero nanoparticle flux through the boundaries. We established that in the new model, oscillatory instability is impossible. We also established that the critical Rayleigh number depends on three dimensionless parameters, and we derived these three parameters from the governing equations. We also briefly investigated the major trends.
