Co-ordination complexes between diesters of α,ω-dicarboxylic acids and titanium tetrachloride, tin tetrachloride, and zirconium tetrachloride have been prepared. The analytical results, the infrared spectra, the melting points, and the molecular-weight determinations indicate that for the titanium and zirconium complexes, two types of complexes are obtained, one having a general formula MX4•1 diester in which chelate rings from five to nine atoms are formed and the other one, 2MX4•1 diester in which there are two 4-membered rings per complex molecule. With tin tetrachloride only one type of complex is formed, which has two tin tetrachlorides and two diesters per complex molecule.

In this research, the modification of TiCl4/MgCl2/THF catalyst system with various metal chlorides was investigated on ethylene polymerization. Experimentally, metal chlorides (CaCl2, FeCl2 and ZnCl2) were simultaneously introduced different with TiCl4/MgCl2/THF catalyst. ICP analysis was used to determine the total amount of each metal in the catalyst. For polymerization reaction, TEA was used as cocatalyst and hexane was used as a medium solvent. The Al/Ti molar ratio was 140. The activity result of Ca-Al, Zn-Al and Fe-Al was 979, 1009 and 1476 kgPE/molTi.h, respectively. The coaddition of AlCl3 and FeCl2 in TiCl4/MgCl2/THF catalyst system exhibited the highest activity. It suggested that the co-addition of AlCl3 and FeCl2 has higher electronegativity (EN) and the radius of Fe2+ is closer to Mg2+ resulting in an increased efficiency of the THF removal. This result led to improve the catalyst performance.

Vinyl ethers, 1-olefins, and styrene were homo- and copolymerized by the use of catalyst derived from a mixture of lithium tetraalkylaluminate (LiAlR4), aluminum chloride (AlCl3), and titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4), in order to determine the nature of the active components present. It is postulated that the active catalyst in the stereospecific polymerization of vinyl ethers is ether-coordinated TiCl3•LiCl, while in the polymerization of 1-olefins and styrene, it is the alkylated derivatives of TiCl3•LiCl.For homo- and copolymerization of styrene, AlR3 seems to be the preferred alkylating agent. About 3 to 4 equivalents of AlR3 are needed for complete alkylation of TiCl3•LiCl, probably due to heterogeneity of the system.Highly isotactic polystyrene and copolymers of styrene with 1-olefins can be prepared in good yields by the use of this catalyst.

TiO2/SiO2, Cr2O3-NiO/SiO2, and TiO2-Cr2O3/SiO2 were prepared by the impregnation method for alkyl carbamate synthesis using urea as the carbonyl source. Up to 97.5% methyl carbamate yield, 97% ethyl carbamate yield, and 96% butyl carbamate yield could be achieved, respectively. The catalysts were characterized by ICP-AES, BET, XRD, XPS, NH3-TPD, and EPMA. Catalytic activity investigation revealed that TiO2/SiO2, Cr2O3-NiO/SiO2, and TiO2-Cr2O3/SiO2 were effective catalysts for methyl carbamate (MC), ethyl carbamate (EC), and butyl carbamate (BC), respectively. The recycling tests suggested that these silica gel supported catalyst system is active, stable, and reusable. A total of 96–97% alkyl carbamate (methyl, ethyl, and butyl) could be obtained in a 2 L autoclave, and these data suggested that our catalyst system is relatively easy to scale up.
