A method has been described for following the rise in temperature of a reacting mixture during the non-stationary state of polymerization reactions. The rate of polymerization and the corresponding lifetime can be obtained from the temperature-time curves, since the reaction near the centre of the reaction vessel remains adiabatic for about 30s. The ratios of the rate constants for the propagation reaction to the termination reaction have been measured for vinyl acetate, methyl methacrylate and butyl acrylate, and compared with the values reported by other investigators using different methods.
