Values of metal potentials, which exceed or equal to the potential at which the corrosion rate of the metal does not exceed 0.01 mm/year, in international practice, are a condition for the effectiveness of cathodic protection of underground pipelines. It is called polarization potential. The range of polarization potentials, which correspond to effective corrosion protection, was determined experimentally as a result of a large number of field tests in different operating conditions. The values of polarization potentials can vary from minus 0.65 V to minus 1.15 V, measured relative to copper sulfate electrode (C.S.E). There are cases during corrosion surveys of underground pipelines, when the measured values of polarization potentials with the help of measuring instruments, intended for this purpose, significantly exceed the maximum permissible value. The author offers an original method for determining the polarization potential based on the analysis of the dependence of the auxiliary electrode potential on the time after the interruption of the polarization current. The values of polarization potentials obtained using this technique are in the standard range. The method can be recommended for experimental use in corrosion surveys of underground pipelines in various operating conditions in order to confirm the compliance of the obtained results with the condition of cathodic protection efficiency.

The electromagnetic method of non-contact current measurements makes it possible to quickly monitor the state of passive (insulating coatings) and active (cathodic polarization) corrosion protection of underground pipelines (UP); detect places of unsatisfactory insulation, determine the transient resistance and its components (resistances of soil, insulating layer, polarization) in different sections, the area of insulation damage, the current distribution of cathodic protection of UP. In combination with contact measurements of direct and alternating voltages, ohmic and polarization potentials, it is possible to determine the polarization resistance and estimate the corrosion rate.

The cathode protection method is a very useful corrosion protection technology for the underground pipelines. However, it has some problems that hydrogen generated by electrochemical reaction on the wet surface of the pipelines is attacked into the pipe weld, and make degradation of their mechanical properties. Therefore, in this study, welding residual stresses around of the X65 pipe weld, which is generally used as a material of the gas pipelines, were previously calculated. And next, by using the cathode protection method, artificially degraded the X65 pipe weld including base metal, assessed its influence on the mechanical properties of the X65 pipe weld.

The perspectivity of protection against corrosion by pulsed current in terms of improving the energy efficiency of cathodic protection stations (CPS) are shown. The cathode polarization of the steel structure to the required protective potential values is provided by the station-controlled current parameters, as well as the transition from the direct current mode to the pulse mode and vice versa. A combined load model was implemented, including a traditional electric circuit for replacing a pipeline and a model based on fuzzy rules (FR), which connect the value of protective potential with the state of protective coatings of an underground steel structure, as well as the parameters of exposure to a corrosive environment. The control of the CPS modes using the FR system made it possible to optimize the station’s power consumption modes taking into account the variability of external environmental factors affecting the underground pipelines.

In this paper we consider main factors which have an influence on energy efficiency of the cathodic protection and analyze them. Cathodic protection is defined as the ratio of the electrical conductivity of electrolyte, which surrounds the underground (underwater) metal construction (pipeline) and its polarization resistance. The obtained results are correct first of all for the case of presence of modern qualitative insulation, which possess high dielectric properties and is made of, for example, polymers or its’ composition and is meant to be used for protection against electrochemical corrosion of the underground pipelines
