In this work, we derive a reliable and efficient residual-typed error estimator for the finite element approximation of a 2D cathodic protection problem governed by a steady-state diffusion equation with a nonlinear boundary condition. We propose a standard adaptive finite element method involving the Dörfler marking and a minimal refinement without the interior node property. Furthermore, we establish the contraction property of this adaptive algorithm in terms of the sum of the energy error and the scaled estimator. This essentially allows for a quasi-optimal convergence rate in terms of the number of elements over the underlying triangulation. Numerical experiments are provided to confirm this quasi-optimality.

Purpose It is a challenge in the design to determine the feasible anode position and the supply current when the hull is protected by the impressed current cathodic protection method. It is difficult to obtain these parameters through traditional experimental methods due to the huge hull surface area and geometric complexity. This study aims to solve the problem by finite element method. Design/methodology/approach First, a great number of experiments need to be conducted; second, experiments are empirical; finally, there exist measurement errors, etc. All these factors make the experimental results less reliable. The application of the finite element method, combined with other technologies, is expected to overcome these deficiencies. In this paper, the combined Matlab and Comsol method was used to calculate various anode positions and corresponding protection areas with a series of input current conditions. The calculation is implemented via the script in Matlab. Findings As a result, the best design can be obtained. The results show that the method provided in this paper can replace the experiment to a certain extent, save human and material resources and reduce the design time. The method also can be applied to other similar fields, having a good universality. Originality/value This optimization method can be extended to other areas of relevant production and research, having a good universality.

In this paper, combination of a boundary element formulation and genetic algorithm (GA) was developed and used for analyzing of cathodic protection systems of buried pipe-lines structures. It is very important to maintain the effectiveness of the cathodic protection system for pipeline structure, in order to lengthen the lifetime of the system. However, nowadays the evaluation of the effectiveness of the system only could be performed after the system applying in the field. This study was conducted to combine 2D boundary element method (BEM) and GA in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the cathodic protection system for pipe-lines structure using ribbon sacrificial anode. Two factors i.e. the soil conductivity and the distance between pipe-lines and anode, were analyzed by using the proposed method. In this method, the potential in the domain was modeled by Laplace’s equation. The anode and cathode areas were represented by polarization curves of different metals. Boundary element method was applied to solve the Laplace’s equation to obtain any potential and current density in the whole surface of the pipe. The pipe and anode were modeled into 2D model. The numerical analysis result shows that the optimum distance between pipe-lines and anode can be determined by combining BEM and GA.

Cathodic protection system is one of corrosion protection systems that well acknowledged protecting infrastructure such as pipeline and storage tank. Early damage of the infrastructure can be caused by improper design of the protection system. Currently, many cathodic protection systems are designed only based on the previous experiences. It is urgently needed the tool that can be used to simulate the effectiveness of any design of cathodic protection system before the system is applied to any structure. In this study, the three-dimensional boundary element method was developed to simulate the effectiveness of sacrificial anode cathodic protection system. The potential in the domain was modeled using Laplace equation. The equation was solved by applying boundary element method, hence the potential and current density on the metal surface and at any location in the domain can be obtained. The boundary conditions on the protected structures and sacrificial anode were represented by their polarization curves. A cathodic protection system for liquid storage tank and submersible pump were evaluated in this study. The effect of placement of sacrificial anode were examined to optimize the protection system. The result shows that the proposed method can be used as a tool to simulate the effectiveness of the sacrificial anode cathodic protection system.

AbstractIn this work, we propose and analyze an adaptive finite element method for a steady-state diffusion equation with a nonlinear boundary condition arising in cathodic protection. Under a general assumption on the marking strategy, we show that the algorithm generates a sequence of discrete solutions that converges strongly to the exact solution in ${H^{1}(\Omega)}$ and the sequence of error estimators has a vanishing limit. Numerical results show clearly the convergence and efficiency of the adaptive algorithm.

Physical models of cathodic protection (CP) for copper protected by 35# steel and for 35# steel protected by aluminum sacrificial anode respectively in seawater were built in this study. Weak form of Laplace equation was deduced to make finite element method (FEM) numerical calculation conveniently. Then, potential distribution of each physical model was computed by FEM following with measured experiments for validation. Typical FEM simulated data along X-axis and Y-axis of physical models agree well with measured experimental data. For 35# steel protected by aluminum sacrificial anode models, normal cathodic protection, over-protected (OP) and under-protected (UP) models were built, respectively. The results demonstrated that it should be feasible of CP for copper by 35# steel and for 35# steel by aluminum sacrificial anode respectively, and FEM could afford well forecast for CP design in engineering.
