Background: Patients with chronic liver disease often suffer from poor quality of life. The Chronic Liver Disease Questionnaire (CLDQ) is a validated tool to assess health-related quality of life in these patients. It has been translated and validated for use in many countries and languages globally. Objectives: We aimed to translate Mainland Chinese Mandarin to Singapore Mandarin and perform cross-cultural adaption of CLDQ for the Mandarin-speaking population in Singapore (CLDQ-SG). Methods: This study was conducted based on the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research Principles of Good Practice. The study consisted of two parts: part one involved cognitive debriefing and cultural adaption of CLDQ, and part two was a pilot study on the first version of CLDQ-SG among adult patients with chronic liver disease in a tertiary hospital. Results: During the cognitive debriefing process of part one, questions beginning with “recent” (最近) two weeks in Mandarin were changed to “last” (在过去) two weeks. Eighteen patients were recruited for part two of the study (50% male, mean age 49±13 years). Time taken to complete CLDQ-SG was 15±8 minutes, and the mean score was 5.1±0.5. The reliability of measurements for all domains was good, with an intra-class correlation coefficient ≥0.8. Items one and four needed further restructuring. There were no discrepancies between CLDQ and CLDQ-SG. Conclusion: This study showed that CLDQ-SG was culturally acceptable by the Mandarin-speaking population in Singapore. There were only two items that needed revision in the finalized CLDQ-SG.

Introduction: The advanced stage of liver disease causes impairments in the quality of life due to the physiological symptoms, besides the social and emotional stress. The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of life of candidates for liver transplantation in specialized center in the interior of the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Methods: An observational study was carried out, with a quantitative approach. The sample was of convenience with the participation of 50 candidates for liver transplantation. Demographic characterization data, clinical data, and the Chronic Liver Disease Questionnaire were used to evaluate the quality of life. Results: The majority of the participants were male (68%), married (76%), with an average age of 55.7 years and average income of 2 to 3 minimum wages (42%). The main cause of liver disease was alcoholism (34%), mean time on the waiting list was 247.8 days, and mean model for end-stage liver disease was 20.5 points. The mean quality of life score was 2.9 points (standard deviation = 1.0) and the analysis of the 6 domains showed greater impairment of fatigue (2.2), activity (2.7), and concern (2.9) and better evaluation of systemic symptoms (3.4) and emotion (3.3). Conclusion: Quality of life is impaired in most of the participants, indicating the need for greater attention and evaluation in the physical, mental, and social scope of this clientele.

Background and Aims: Health-related quality of life is an essential part of managing chronically ill patients, including patients with chronic liver disease. Various methods are used to try to assess the quality of life ranging from generic to disease-specific questionnaires. Some of the results may reveal a novel connection to the disease‘s evolution, which is observed directly by the patient. This study aimed to validate and assess the chronic liver disease questionnaire (CLDQ-RO) performance in the Romanian population. Methods: A two-phase study was designed. The first phase consisted of linguistic validation of CLDQ-RO (translation and piloting), while in the second phase, the questionnaire was applied to patients with various chronic liver diseases. Statistical validation (reliability, structural, and construct validity) was performed using SPSS v20.0, and statistical significance was considered p<0.05. Results: The CLDQ-RO was applied to 231 patients with chronic liver disease (14.3% with chronic hepatitis, 35.5% with compensated cirrhosis, and 50.2% with decompensated cirrhosis). The questionnaire showed excellent overall reliability (Cronbach‘s alpha=0.93) and good structural and construct validity, with most of the items in CLDQ-RO fitting in the domains of the original version of the questionnaire. There was a significant decrease in the overall score of the CLDQ-RO with the progression of disease (p<0.001), indicating a substantial impact of the decompensation event on health-related quality of life. Regarding the type of decompensation, ascites accurately predicted a lower quality of life (p=0.004). Conclusions: The CLDQ-RO is a valid and disease-specific method for assessing patients‘ health-related quality of life with liver disease. Among the decompensation events, it seems that ascites seriously impacts the quality of life.

Objective. To compare and analyze the relevance and applied value of chronic liver disease questionnaire (CLDQ) and Traditional Chinese Medicine liver disease questionnaire (TCMLDQ) in patients with posthepatitic cirrhosis.Methods. The data of 146 patients' scales of CLDQ and TCMLDQ which based on the characteristics of chinese medical symptoms were collected. We made comparative analysis of the relationship between these two scales by the linear regression model and canonical correlation method and evaluated the advantages and disadvantages of two scales about its items setting and dimension definition.Result. There is a negative correlation in total scores between the two scales and the linear regression equation:CLDQ=239.38−1.232TCMLDQ. The further canonical correlation analysis was used to analyze the two extracted canonical correlative variables with significances (P<0.05), and the results showed that the overall negative correlation between the two scales mainly came from contributions of both the four dimensions of TCMLDQ (CS, GSYX, GYPX, and OS) and the five dimensions of CLDQ (AS, FA, SS, AC, and EF).Conclusion. These two scales have good consistency in the evaluation of severity and life quality of liver cirrhosis patients, so we suggested that TCMLDQ can be used to evaluate the severity and life quality of patients with posthepatitic cirrhosis.

Liver disease affects over 25 million people in the United States and, despite advances in medical management resulting in increased survival, a majority of these individuals report multiple co-occurring symptoms that severely impair functioning and quality of life. The purpose of this review is to (1) propose defining these co-occurring symptoms as a symptom cluster of chronic liver disease (CLD), (2) discuss putative underlying biological mechanisms related to CLD, including the liver–gut–brain axis and influence of the microbiome, and (3) discuss the implications for biobehavioral research in this patient population. Biobehavioral research focusing on the interrelated, and possibly synergistic, mechanisms of these symptoms may lead to the development and testing of targeted symptom management interventions for improving function and quality of life in this growing patient population.
