Purpose This paper aims to study the inertia squeeze film characteristics between ferrofluid-lubricated circular stepped disks. Owing to the development of modern machine systems, the application of ferrofluids has received great attention. Because the circular disks are a special situation of circular stepped squeeze films, a further study of fluid inertia force effects on the ferrofluid-lubricated circular stepped squeezing mechanism is motivated. Design/methodology/approach On the basis of the ferrohydrodynamic flow model of Shliomis incorporating the momentum integral method, the effects of fluid inertia forces in ferrofluid-lubricated circular stepped squeeze films in the presence of external magnetic fields are investigated in this study. Analytical solutions of squeeze film performances are derived. Findings The fluid inertia force effects provide an increased load capacity and a longer squeeze film time for the ferrofluid-lubricated circular stepped squeeze film, especially for a larger value of the inertia parameter, the Langevin parameter and the volume concentration and a smaller value of the radius ratio and the step height ratio. Originality/value For engineering applications, numerical tables for squeeze film loads of circular stepped disks are also provided in this paper.

A study of non-Newtonian inertia squeeze film in rectangular stepped plates has been presented in this paper. Applying the momentum integral method incorporating the micro-continuum theory of non-Newtonian fluids, a non-Newtonian inertia lubrication equation is derived. It is found that the fluid inertia effects yield in a higher normal load capacity as well as a longer squeeze film time as compared to the non-Newtonian stepped squeeze film in the absence of fluid inertia forces.

By applying the micropolar fluid model of Eringen (J. Math. Mech. 16, 1 (1966) and Int. J. Mech. Sci. 31, 605 (1993)), the squeeze film lubrication problems between conical plates are extended in the present paper. A non-Newtonian modified Reynolds equation is derived and applied to obtain the solution of squeeze film characteristics. Comparing with the traditional Newtonian case, the non-Newtonian effects of micropolar fluids are found to enhance the load capacity and lengthen the approaching time of conical plates. Some numerical results are also provided in tables for engineer applications

A theoretical investigation of the laminar squeeze flow of a couple-stress fluid between a flat circular static disk and an axisymmetric curved circular moving disk has been carried out using modified lubrication theory and microcontinuum theory. The combined effects of fluid inertia forces, curvature of the disk and non-Newtonian couple stresses on the squeeze film behavior are investigated analytically. Each of these effects and their combinations show a significant enhancement in the squeeze film behavior, and these are studied through their effects on the squeeze film pressure and the load carrying capacity of the fluid film as a function of time. Two different forms of the gapwidth between the disks have been considered, and the results have been shown to be in good agreement with the existing literature.

The use of additives (polyisobutylene, ethylene-propylene, lithium hydroxy stearate, hydrophobic silica, etc.) changes lubricants’ rheology due to which they show pseudoplastic and dilatant nature, which can be modelled as cubic stress fluid model (Rabinowitsch fluid model). The present theoretical analysis investigates the effects of non-Newtonian pseudoplastic and dilatant lubricants on the squeezing characteristics of a sphere and a flat plate. The modified Reynolds equation has been derived and an asymptotic solution for film pressure is obtained. The results for the film pressure distribution, load carrying capacity, and squeezing time characteristics have been calculated for various values of pseudoplastic parameter and compared with the Newtonian results. These characteristics show a significant variation with the non-Newtonian pseudoplastic and dilatant behavior of the fluids.

Recent theoretical work by Tichy and Bou-Said (1991) and El-Shafei and Crandall (1991) has resulted in new theoretical expressions for the nonlinear inertia forces for both short and long cylindrical squeeze film dampers (SFDs). This paper provides alternative derivations for the short cylindrical SFD using as a starting point a simplified two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation. The resulting expressions for the fluid inertia forces are similar to the Tichy and Bou-Said/El-Shafei and Crandall expressions except for differences in certain numerical constants which can be explained by the different averaging methods used within the squeeze-film thickness. The analyses give additional insight into the temporal and convective origins of the various coefficients. The theoretical results are compared with published theoretical and experimental work involving nonlinear cylindrical SFD behavior. The paper highlights the importance of convective inertia terms when cylindrical SFDs operate at large values of eccentricity ratio.
