Samarium doped hydroxyapatite (Ca10−xSmx(PO4)6(OH)2, xSm = 0.5, 50SmHAp) is a very promising candidate to be used for different coatings in various dental and orthopedic implants. We report, for the first time, the obtaining of 50SmHAp thin films by a cost-effective method, namely spin coating. Thin films of 50SmHAp on silicon substrate have been analyzed by various techniques such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), Metallographic microscopy and Glow Discharge Optical Emission Spectroscopy (GDOES). The stability of 50SmHAp suspension was evaluated by ultrasound measurements. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were also used to evaluate the 50SmHAp suspension. The antifungal activity of 50SmHAp suspension and coatings was assessed using Candida albicans ATCC 10231 fungal strain (C. albicans). The results of the antifungal assays depicted that both 50SmHAp suspensions and coatings were effective in inhibiting the development of C. albicans fungal cells, thus making them ideal candidates for the development of novel antifungal agents. The obtained results give new perspective for possible applications of 50SmHAp thin films in various medical applications due to their antifungal properties.

 AbstrakAdsorpsi zat warna basic red 18 dan direct black 38 dengan adsorben dari serat pinang telah diteliti. Morfologi dan gugus fungsi permukaan serat pinang dianalisa dengan Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) dan scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Penelitian ini fokus pada mekanisme adsorpsi dan pengaruh dosis adsorben. Koefisien korelasi (R2) dianalisis dengan menggunakan regresi linier. Mekanisme adsorpsi dilakukan dengan menggunakan dua model isoterm, yaitu isoterm Langmuir dan Freundlich. Hasil kajian menunjukkan bahwa model Freundlich adalah yang paling sesuai diaplikasikan untuk adsorpsi zat warna basic red 18 dan direct black 38. Karena model Freundlich mampu menginterpretasikan proses adsorpsi zat warna basic red 18 dan direct black 38 dengan baik, maka sistem adsorpsi yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah heterogen. Kapasitas adsorpsi untuk basic red 18 pada berbagai berat adsorben (seperti: 1, 2, dan 3 g) menggunakan model Freundlich adalah 0,234 L/g; 0,101 L/g dan 0,093 L/g.  Sementara kapasitas untuk direct black 38 adalah 0,360 L/g; 0,374 L/g dan 0,141 L/g.

AbstractThe research deals with biodegradation of films prepared from polyvinylpyrrolidone and polylactic acid (PVP/PLA). Biodegradation of PVP/PLA films was supported by the following additives: 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, 1-octyl-2-pyrrolidone, acrylamide and N-acetyl-L-phenylalanine according to the previous study. The films were prepared by a solvent casting technique. Biodegradation was observed using the respirometric method in different environments. The films subjected to biodegradation were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. It was found that the films are substantially degraded, but not in the biological way; PVP was quickly removed in presence of water because of its easy solubility. In contrast, this fact could support biodegradation of PLA, which becomes more available for microorganisms when PVP leaves PLA matrix.

The aim was to develop an economical and biocompatible collagen-based bioactive composite for tooth regeneration. Acid-soluble collagen was extracted and purified from fish scales. The design was innovated to molecularly tailor the surface charge sites of the nano-apatite providing chemical bonds with the collagen matrix via microwave irradiation technique. The obtained collagen was identified by sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis analysis. The composites were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis/differential scanning calorimetry, and scanning electron microscopy. MC3T3-E1 cell lines were used to assess the biological effects of these materials by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-tetra zolium bromide (MTT) assay. Indirect contact test was performed by extracting representative elutes in cell culture media and sulforhodamine B analysis was performed. Chorioallantoic membrane assay was conducted to define the new vessels formation behavior. The purity of collagen extracts was determined and showed two α-chains, i.e. the characteristic of type I collagen. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy showed the characteristic peaks for amide I, I, III, and phosphate for collagen and composites. Scanning electron microscopy images showed three-dimensional mesh of collagen/apatite nano-fibers. Nontoxic behavior of composites was observed and there were graded and dose-related effects on experimental compounds. The angiogenesis and vessels formation behavior were observed in bioactive collagen composite. The obtained composites have potential to be used for tooth structure regeneration.
