ABSTRACT Late Glacial (since Oldest Dryas) and Holocene (to Subatlantic) changes of vegetation at the Węgliny site (south-west Poland) are reconstructed based mainly on pollen analysis of five cores from the palaeobasin (anaerobic sediments). The chronology of the described events is based on palynological comparison with the Lubsza Plain environs, based on LPAZs from several published pollen diagrams on 14C data, and multiple cryptotephra levels determined in the Węgliny profiles. The Węgliny record integrates well into the north European Holocene and Late Glacial biostratigraphic framework. The Węgliny site is the next (fourth) locality in Poland where the Laacher See Tephra (LST) horizon within the Allerød chronozone was identified.

Abstract. Eine klassische weichselspätglaziale Lokalität ist die kleine Toteishohlform des Niedersees, welche direkt an der südöstlichen Küste der Halbinsel Jasmund (Rügen, Ostsee) aufgeschlossen ist. Neue Studien wurden durchgeführt, bei denen sich die sedimentäre Abfolge des Niedersees als ein hervorragendes Archiv für paläoökologische/-klimatische Rekonstruktionen erwies, wodurch detaillierte Aussagen zur regionalen Vegetationsgeschichte sowie zum regionalen Klima und Milieu während des Weichselspätglazials und auch teilweise für das Holozäns möglich sind. Mit Hilfe der Pollenstratigraphie, AMS 14C-Datierungen und dem Nachweis der Laacher See Tephra konnte die sedimentäre Abfolge in die bestehende Quartärstratigraphie eingehängt werden; als Besonderheit ist hier das quasi gesamte Weichselspätglazial vollständig aufgeschlossen. Die Sedimentation beginnt schon im ausgehenden Weichselhochglazial und dauert zunächst bis zum Präboreal an (~15.000–~10.000 Jahre v. H.) und ist vor allem durch Ablagerungen eines kleinen, flachen Sees charakterisiert. Änderungen im Wasserhaushalt führten letztendlich während des Präboreals zu einem Hiatus. Eine letztmalige Vernässung des Standorts führte im Atlantikum zur Entwicklung eines kalkigen Niedermoors. Die sich ergänzenden Analysen der verschiedenen und vielfältigen Organismenreste des Niedersees (z. B. Pollen, Ostracoden, Mollusken, Makroreste von Pflanzen etc.), erlaubten in sehr detaillierter Weise Änderungen im Klima und deren Auswirkungen auf das Habitat zu erfassen.

The Laacher Sec Tephra (LST) layer provides a unique and invaluable time marker in European sediments with increasing importance because it occurs just before the onset of the Younger Dryas (YD) cold event. As the YD begins ca. 200 calendar years after the LST was deposited, accurate determination of the radiocarbon age of this ash layer will lead to a more accurate age assignment for the beginning of the YD. On the basis of 12 terrestrial plant macrofossil 14C ages derived from sediments from Soppensee, Holzmaar and Schlakenmehrener Maar, we found an age of at least 11,230 ± 40 bp for the LST event. This is ca. 200 yr older than the often reported age of 11,000 ± 50 bp (van den Bogaard and Schmincke 1985).

Abstract. Im westlichen Geiseltal (mittleres Elbe-Saalegebiet, westlich von Merseburg) waren spätglaziale und holozäne Serien großflächig aufgeschlossen. Sie lagen auf der Niederterrasse und dem Löß der Weichselkaltzeit. Im wesentlichen handelte es sich um limnische und telmatische Sedimente. Sie zeigten eine Gliederung in fünf Sedimentzyklen mit zwei präböllingzeitlichen Intervallen (Müchelner Intervalle 1 und 2), mit Bölling, Alleröd und Holozän. Die Kaltphasen waren durch Beckenschluffe, die warmen Phasen durch Mudden und Torfe, seit dem Alleröd auch durch Charatravertinsande gekennzeichnet. Im Alleröd war die Laacher-See-Tephra eingelagert. In der Jüngeren Dryas-Zeit entstanden zum letzten Male Frostspaltennetze. Für Ältere Dryas-Zeit, Alleröd und Jüngere Dryas-Zeit wurde mit Hilfe der Pollenanalyse die Vegetationsgeschichte ermittelt. Alle Horizonte sind durch Molluskenfaunen dokumentiert, die in ihrer wechselnden Zusammensetzung den detaillierten Klimaablauf erkennen lassen. Zugleich liegt eine der bedeutendsten spätglazialen Molluskensukzessionen Mitteleuropas vor.

AbstractPerrierite-(Ce) crystals from ejecta of the Laacher See volcano, Eifel, in Germany were studied by X-ray single-crystal diffraction and electron microprobe analysis. The composition and crystal structure of this sample is discussed in relation to the known properties of the chevkinite group minerals and related synthetic compounds. Taking into account the modular character of the chevkinite minerals, based on a rutile and a silicate module, the preferred formation of either the perrierite or the chevkinite structure type is correlated with the formal charge of the rutile and silicate modules. The rutile module is expected to carry a negative charge, compensated by a positive charge of the silicate module. On average, the charge modulus is observed to be larger for the chevkinite-type module stacking. It can drop to zero in perrierite-type structures rich in Sr or Ca. In such cases, it is generally not expected to rise above two. The perrierite-(Ce) described in this study crystallizes in space group C2/m. The anisotropic oxygen and rare-earth element displacements observed in this crystal indicate a local domain structure of $$P2_1/a$$ P 2 1 / a symmetry, when compared to the $$P2_1/a$$ P 2 1 / a symmetry of the synthetic perrierite $$\hbox {La}_4\hbox {Mg}_2\hbox {Ti}_3\hbox {O}_8(\hbox {Si}_2\hbox {O}_7)_2$$ La 4 Mg 2 Ti 3 O 8 ( Si 2 O 7 ) 2 .
