ABSTRACTIn this study the intermolecular interactions of small diameter (∼0.7nm) carbon nanotubes and γ-cyclodextrin were examined. Four samples of γ cyclodextrin and HiPco carbon nanotubes were prepared. The first, by grinding the tubes and the cyclodextrin (1:30 ratio) together in a dry mixture, the second was prepared in a similar fashion but was ground in the presence of water (1ml). Finally an aqueous solution of γ-cyclodextrin (0.3M) and HiPco carbon nanotubes (5mg) was prepared by refluxing for ∼100 hours, forming a pale yellow solution from which a number of crystals were produced, both the solution and the recrystallised material were analysed. The samples were analysed using UV-Vis-NIR and Raman spectroscopy. The results presented are the first spectroscopic evidence of an intermolecular interaction between γ-cyclodextrin and single wall nanotubes.

The stability constants of the 1:1 complexes formed between methylphosphonylphosphate (MePP3-), CH3P(O)2--O-PO32- , and Mg2+, Ca2+, Sr2+, Ba2+, Mn2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, or Cd2+ (M2+) were determined by potentiometric pH titration in aqueous solution (25 C° ; l = 0.1 M, NaNO3 ). Monoprotonated M(H;MePP) complexes play only a minor role. Based on previously established correlations for M2+ -diphosphate monoester complex-stabilities and diphosphate monoester β-group. basicities, it is shown that the M(Mepp)- complexes for Mg2+ and the ions of the second half of the 3d series, including Zn2+ and Cd2+, are on average by about 0.15 log unit more stable than is expected based on the basicity of the terminal phosphate group in MePP3-. In contrast, Ba(Mepp)- and Sr(Mepp)- are slightly less stable, whereas the stability for Ca(Mepp)- is as expected, based on the mentioned correlation. The indicated increased stabilities are explained by an increased basicity of the phosphonyl group compared to that of a phosphoryl one. For the complexes of the alkaline earth ions, especially for Ba2+, it is suggested that outersphere complexation occurs to some extent. However, overall the M(Mepp)- complexes behave rather as expected for a diphosphate monoester ligand.

The pulsed-laser Raman spectrum of aqueous solution of UO2(NO3)2•6H2O is reported. Raman shifts were observed which could be assigned to the v1 mode of the UO2 unit in species (UO2)3(OH),+, (UO2)2(OH)52+, and UO22+. Vibrational ground and excited level transitions were induced, where part of the laser radiation at 22350 cm−1 was used as an optical pump while the remaining part served as Raman probe. The lifetimes of the excited states were 7 μs and 1.5 μs for the trinuclear and dinuclear species, respectively. An analysis of the population characteristics of the ground and electronic excited states of the trinuclear species was performed and compared with the time evolution of the scattered light due to vibrational Raman processes in the ground and electronic excited states
