Background: In this study, the aim was to evaluate the prevalence of vitamin D, vitamin B12, ferritin, and folate deficiencies in adolescence to clarify the need for early diagnosis and therapy. Methods: The medical records of adolescents between 10 and 18 years of age between 01 September 2018 and 28 February 2019 as healthy with non-specific complaints, or due to well-child care visits, were analyzed retrospectively. Results: A total of 1847/2507 (73.6%) adolescents were included in the study. The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency was 25.7% (n: 178/691). Vitamin B12 deficiency prevalence was 69.2% (n: 753/1088). The prevalence of anemia and ferritin deficiency was 4.8% and 13.26%. The prevalence of folate deficiency was 37.9% (n: 413/1088). VDD prevalence was statistically significantly higher in females than males (F/M:116/62). VB12D prevalence, the number and mean age of females with hemoglobin deficiency, and low ferritin levels was found to be statistically significantly higher in females than males. Conclusions: The prevalence of vitamin D, vitamin B12, folate deficiency and low ferritin levels was found to be high among adolescents. In particular, adolescents admitting with non-specific complaints and for control purposes in big cities must be considered to be at risk for the deficiency of these vitamins and low level of ferritin.

Abstract Objectives There is no reliable and valid biomarker to identify Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and its subtypes. The aim of this study is to explore potential serum biomarkers that may be associated with IBS subtypes, particularly in the vitamin D pathway. Methods The study population comprised 75 IBS patients and 79 controls. Patients divided into IBS subtypes. Routine biochemical parameters, 25-OH-vitamin D, vitamin D binding protein (VDBP) and vitamin D receptor (VDR) serum levels were compared between IBS subtypes and controls. Factors related to IBS subtypes were examined by multivariate logistic regression analysis. Results Vitamin D levels were lower; VDBP and VDR were higher in all IBS patients than in controls (p<0.001; 0.047 and 0.029, respectively). According to logistic regression analysis, VDBP was a disease-related parameter as much as vitamin D in all IBS subtypes. C-reactive protein (CRP) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) were higher especially in diarrhea-dominant IBS (IBS-D) (p=0.041; 0.046) and vitamin B12 were significantly lower in constipation-dominant IBS (IBS-C) (p=0.001). Conclusions Increased VDBP levels were associated with all IBS subtypes. Patients, especially in IBS-D, had higher serum levels of VDBP, CRP and ESR. Vitamin B12 deficiency, which we consider as a result of the disease, was more common in IBS-C.

Vitamin D status is relatively poor in the general population, potentially leading to various conditions. The present study evaluates the relationship between vitamin D status and intake in the UK population and the impact of vitamin D fortified ready-to-eat cereals (RTEC) on this status via data from the National Diet and Nutrition Survey (NDNS: 2008–2012). Four cohorts were addressed: ages 4–10 (n = 803), ages 11–18 (n = 884), ages 19–64 (n = 1655) and ages 65 and higher (n = 428). The impact of fortification by 4.2 μg vitamin D per 100 g of RTEC on vitamin D intake and status was mathematically modelled. Average vitamin D daily intake was age-dependent, ranging from ~2.6 (age range 4–18 years) to ~5.0 μg (older than 64 years). Average 25(OH)D concentration ranged from 43 to 51 nmol/L, the highest in children. The relationship between vitamin D intake and status followed an asymptotic curve with a predicted plateau concentration ranging from 52 in children to 83 nmol/L in elderly. The fortification model showed that serum concentrations increased with ~1.0 in children to ~6.5 nmol/L in the elderly. This study revealed that vitamin D intake in the UK population is low with 25(OH)D concentrations being suboptimal for general health. Fortification of breakfast cereals can contribute to improve overall vitamin D status.

Abstract Objectives Advanced Glycation End Products, (AGEs) and their soluble receptor (sRAGE) have been implicated in the development of complications and mortality among individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2D). There is limited information on the relationship between AGEs and sRAGE and risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in minority groups, who have a higher burden of T2D. The relationship between AGEs and sRAGE and CVD risks in adults with T2D and vitamin D insufficiency/deficiency was assessed in a minority population. Methods A cross sectional study of Hispanics and African Americans with T2D (n = 64, 41 women and 23 men, mean age = 54 ± 9) recruited from two clinics in Miami Dade. Systolic (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP), weight and height measurement and serum lipid profile were completed. ELISA kits were used to assess serum levels of AGEs (Biotang Inc/TSZ Elisa, Waltham, MA, USA) and sRAGE (Biotang Inc/TSZ Elisa, Waltham, MA, USA). Multiple linear regression was used to assess association between AGEs, sRAGE and CVD risks. Results A negative and significant association between AGEs and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C)(B = −0.551, P = 0.029) was found. The relationship between AGEs and HDL-C persisted after adjusting for covariates (P < 0.05). sRAGE was significantly associated with SBP (B = 0.015, P = 0.025) and diastolic blood pressure DBP (B = 0.0271, P = 0.037). Results loss significance when association between sRAGE and DBP and SBP were adjusted for covariates such as age, body mass index (BMI), smoking and alcohol intake. Conclusions Our results suggest that AGEs and sRAGE are related to markers of cardiovascular risk such as HDL-C, SBP and DBP in the study population of African Americans and Hispanics with T2D and vitamin D insufficiency/deficiency. Measures on reducing serum levels of AGEs and improving sRAGE and vitamin D are warranted in these populations for risk reduction of CVD. 1521 Background: Vitamin D (VitD) is a circulating hormone known to regulate gene transcription in breast cancer (BC) cells. The association between VitD and BC risk has been extensively studied. Until recently, however, the role of VitD in BC progression and its association with clinical outcomes among BC patients was poorly understood. To assess these new developments, a systematic review and meta-analysis was performed. Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis by searching MEDLINE (1982 – 2012), ASCO, and SABCS for abstracts (2009 – 2012), with the following keywords: “breast cancer” and “prognosis” or “survival”, and “vitamin D” or ”calcitriol.” Abstracts were scrutinized for reports correlating serum VitD levels with breast cancer clinical outcomes, including: disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS). Studies were included if serum VitD samples were taken shortly after diagnosis and survival data were reported. Meta-analyses were performed using an inverse-variance weighted fixed-effects model. Results: We identified 7 studies reporting correlative data between serum VitD levels and BC survival. These data included 4,885 patients evaluated for DFS and 3858 patients evaluated for OS. VitD-deficiency was defined as <30ng/mL, <20ng/mL, and <14ng/mL in 3, 3, and 1 studies, respectively, and was identified in an average of 48.1% of patients (range: 17.9-87.8%). VitD deficiency was associated with a pooled hazard ratio (HR) of 2.13 (CI: 1.64 - 2.78) and 1.76 (CI: 1.35 - 2.30) for DFS and OS, respectively. Conclusions: To our knowledge, this is the first report of a meta-analysis of the relationship between serum VitD and BC prognosis. The prevalence of VitD-deficiency varied widely across studies and may reflect differences in geographic location, race, and rates of supplementation across patient populations. These findings support the hypothesis that VitD-deficient breast cancer patients have poorer clinical outcomes than VitD sufficient patients; but do not establish whether this relationship is causative. Further studies are warranted to investigate the possible protective effects of VitD supplementation on survival among VitD-deficient BC patients.

Introduction: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) from the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is one of the most important epidemiological events in the past 100 years has become, the consequences for public health and economic systems around the world. Vitamin D is an important micronutrient that has been reported to improve immunity and protect against respiratory diseases. In this study, we intend to review articles that examine the relationship between COVID-19 and vitamin D. Methods: This is a review that uses articles from studies published in 2020 on the relationship between COVID-19 and vitamin D in databases such as; Web of Science, Science Direct, SID, Magiran, Google Scholar and PubMed. Keywords used included; serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D, vitamin D, COVID-19, SARS-COV-2 and coronavirus 2. With this search, 32 articles were finally selected for this purpose and their results were reviewed Results: Of the 32 studies reviewed, only three showed no association between vitamin D levels in the blood and COVID-19 disease. Other studies had a relationship between the severity of the disease, mortality rate and length of hospital stay, in different age, gender and location groups. Conclusion: It seems that the level of vitamin D in the blood has a potential effect on COVID-19 disease. Checking the serum vitamin D levels and supplementation in people with hypovitaminosis D can be a good solution to reduce the complications and problems caused by COVID-19.

Background: The COVID-19 can cause serious life-threatening complications. Vitamin D deficiency has been proposed to mediate the disease by some studies, however, there is a lack of sufficient data. Methods: In this descriptive-analytical study, 72 Iranian adult patients with COVID-19 were examined. At the beginning of hospitalization, serum levels of vitamin D were checked and patients were divided into four groups as vitamin D above normal, normal, insufficient, or deficient. The prognosis of patients has been evaluated based on serum levels of vitamin D and other underlying factors. Results: Only 30% of patients had normal vitamin D concentrations. Vitamin D status was associated with COVID-19 complications, but not with underlying diseases. In the multivariable logistic regression, COVID-19 prognosis was associated with being male, length of stay in an intensive care unit (ICU), need for intubation, acute respiratory disease syndrome (ARDS), and myocarditis. The serum vitamin D correlated with COVID-19 complications including ARDS, QT length, the requirement to ICU, and intubation. Conclusion: This study showed a mediating role for vitamin D in COVID-19 complications and identified the frequent complications in these patients and contributing variables exaggerating prognosis for health authorities to properly manage COVID-19 in hospitals. Further relevant examinations are highly encouraged.

Background: In the last decade, a number of studies have examined the relationship between serum vitamin D concentration and the risk of cerebrovascular events. Besides vitamin D, the latest evidence shows that vitamin A is also a risk factor for cerebrovascular disease. Vitamin A and its derivatives act biologically via specific nuclear receptors that regulate gene transcription. Vitamin A receptors can also interact with other nuclear receptors that have neuroprotective effects such as vitamin D, against stroke. Although many studies suggested the synergism of vitamin A and D, there is still no study that evaluates their levels simultaneously in acute phase ischemic stroke, and the relationship to outcome. Objective: The objective of this study was to analyze the correlation between serum vitamin A and D levels on admission in Acute Ischemic Stroke patients and clinical outcome by using the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS). Methods: A prospective cohort study was conducted, and samples were followed since the diagnosis of acute-phase Ischemic Stroke was established until the clinical outcome of day 14 after stroke onset. A total of 50 subjects enrolled for this study would be examined for serum levels of vitamins A and D on admission, and on the 14th day were assessed for NIHSS as a clinical outcome. Results: From 50 research subjects, the mean of vitamin A and D level in the acute phase of Ischemic Stroke was 463.35 ± 116.97 µg/L and 21.65 ± 6.51 ng/mL, respectively. By using the Spearman’s correlation test, it was found that the acute phase vitamin A level and NIHSS on day 14 had a significant and strong correlation with p = 0.045 (r = -0.672). Along with it, vitamin D serum levels and NIHSS also had a significant and strong correlation with p = 0.026 (r = -0.754). Both of these results showed that vitamin A and D had an inverse association with NIHSS, meaning that the higher vitamin A and D serum levels, the better the clinical outcome would be. Conclusion: Both serum vitamin A and D levels in the acute phase of Ischemic Stroke was correlated strongly with short time clinical outcome. The higher vitamin A and D serum levels in the acute phase, the better the clinical outcome would be for Ischemic Stroke patients.
