We examined the time course of the influence of cycloheximide on descending pressure-volume curves of excised lungs and on protein and lecithin synthesis and oxygen consumption by lung slices. We also looked at the influence of cycloheximide on granular pneumocyte ultrastructure. Excised lungs from cycloheximide-treated animals are more compliant than controls. After ventilation with air, lungs from control and cycloheximide animals show increased retractive forces and a shift to the right of the deflation P-V curve. Incubation at 38 degrees C for 30 min reverses these changes in control lungs, but not in lungs from cycloheximide-treated rabbits. There is no change in liquid delfation P-V curves after cycloheximide. Cycloheximide causes an immediate decrease of 50% in incorporation of radioactive leucine into protein by lung slices. Incorporation of radioactive palmitate into lecithin and oxygen consumption are also decreased by 50% 6 h after cycloheximide. Lamellar bodies in granular pneumocytes are smaller after cycloheximide. Cycloheximide causes a significant increase in the surface density of the lamellar body envelope. Cytoplasmic area of granular pneumocytes is increased after cycloheximide.

Cationic amphiphilic drugs (CADs) can induce phospholipidosis (PLD) in organs/tissues. Several ophthalmic pharmaceuticals containing CADs are marketed and used in children. To investigate the effect of PLD on the developing cornea, chloroquine and amiodarone, which are representative CADs, were applied topically to the eyes of juvenile rabbits, and the effects in juvenile rabbits were compared with those in young adult rabbits. Diffuse corneal cloudiness was observed in chloroquine- and amiodarone-treated eyes. Histopathologically, vacuolation was observed in the corneal epithelium and keratocytes. On ultrastructural examination, these vacuoles contained multilamellar inclusion bodies, which are a characteristic of PLD. The size of the vacuoles in the corneal epithelium was reduced in juveniles compared with young adults. Cytoplasmic lamellar bodies and exocytosis in the corneal endothelium were observed in young adult rabbits but not in juvenile rabbits. This study revealed that topical application of chloroquine or amiodarone induces corneal PLD in juvenile and young adult rabbits. Corneal endothelial changes occurred only in young adult rabbits, but ophthalmological changes were similar between juveniles and young adults. The results of the study suggest that the effects of corneal PLD were similar among age groups based on risk assessment.

In Helix aspersa the ‘cuticle’ on the free surface of the external epithelial cells of the optic tentacles has been shown to consist of a layer of microvilli. Microvilli are also present in the same species on the free cell borders of the body-wall, and in the slug Arion hortensis, on the outer cell surfaces of the external epithelium. In all three cases the microvilli are arranged in a hexagonal pattern. There are indications that branching may possibly occur. The microvilli have granular cores with cross- and longitudinal-striations and there are fibrillar connexions between their tips. On the tentacular and body surfaces of H. aspersa, the microvilli increase the surface area 15 and 12 times, respectively. On A. hortensis the increase in surface area is only 4 times. In H. aspersa, beneath the microvilli on the tips of the optic tentacles there is a layer, about 3 to 4 µ deep, composed of vertical, horizontal, and tangential fibres. Some of these fibres are attached to lamellar bodies, which may have a lipid content. Granules are also found among the fibres. Further, a greater depth of cuticle is found to be present on the tips of the inferior tentacles of H. aspersa than on their sides; this seems to indicate that a fibrillar layer, similar to that on the optic tentacles, may lie beneath the cuticle of microvilli on the tips of the inferior tentacles. A thicker cuticle is also found on the tips of the optic tentacles in other stylommatophoran pulmonates. It has not been found possible to ascertain whether the fibrillar layer is intracellular or extracellular, although the evidence points to the latter. Histochemical tests indicate that mucopolysaccharide is present on the surface of the cuticle. Electron micrographs show a granular precipitate caught on and between the fibrillae connecting the tips of the microvilli. It is suggested that the function of the microvilli is to hold the mucous secretions on the body-surface, which would give protection to the animals.

Se registró por primera vez el comportamiento de homing en Chaetophractus villosus. Se capturaron 33 individuos de C. villosus y se liberaron a diferentes distancias en Península Valdés, Chubut, Argentina. Del total de individuos, el 30 % regresó al punto captura dentro de los 12 días desde la liberación. El tiempo de recaptura aumentó de manera no linear respecto a la distancia, por lo que los puntos de liberación podrían estar fuera de su área de acción. El regreso al sitio de captura posiblemente se debe a que los peludos reconozcan a este sitio como fuente de recursos alimenticios.
