The molecular structures of square-planar X42+, X4+, and X4 (X = S, Se, Te) have been calculated using the effective core potential model. For X42+ the agreement between experimental and calculated values is excellent provided that d orbitals are included in the basis set. For the hypothetical molecules X4+ and X4 the bond lengths are found to increase dramatically as one and, subsequently, two electrons are added to the systems. Extensive population analysis shows that this increase is almost exclusively due to loss of bonding in the π system, whereas the bonding in the σ system remains relatively unaltered. These results make it possible to predict covalent single bond radii for S, Se, and Te for which the influence of π repulsion is removed. From the calculated variation of bond lengths with atomic charge, bond lengths are predicted for a series of planar disulphide rings. Keywords: structure, bonding, chalcogen, theoretical, ECP.

The crystal structure of the room-temperature modification of K[Hg(SCN)3], potassium trithiocyanatomercurate(II), was redetermined based on modern CCD data. In comparison with the previous report [Zhdanov & Sanadze (1952).Zh. Fiz. Khim.26, 469–478], reliability factors, standard deviations of lattice parameters and atomic coordinates, as well as anisotropic displacement parameters, were revealed for all atoms. The higher precision and accuracy of the model is, for example, reflected by the Hg—S bond lengths of 2.3954 (11), 2.4481 (8) and 2.7653 (6) Å in comparison with values of 2.24, 2.43 and 2.77 Å. All atoms in the crystal structure are located on mirror planes. The Hg2+cation is surrounded by four S atoms in a seesaw shape [S—Hg—S angles range from 94.65 (2) to 154.06 (3)°]. The HgS4polyhedra share a common S atom, building up chains extending parallel to [010]. All S atoms of the resulting1∞[HgS2/1S2/2] chains are also part of SCN−anions that link these chains with the K+cations into a three-dimensional network. The K—N bond lengths of the distorted KN7polyhedra lie between 2.926 (2) and 3.051 (3) Å.

The structures of two crystalline modifications of mer -(Pme2Ph)3H-cis-Cl2IrIII, (1), have been determined from single-crystal X-ray diffraction data. Modification (A) is monoclinic, space group P21/c with a 12.635(1), b 30.605(3), c 14.992(2)Ǻ, β 110.01(2)° and Z = 8. Modification (B) is orthorhombic, space group Pbca with a 27.646(3), b 11.366(1), c 17.252(2)Ǻ and Z = 8. The structures were solved by conventional heavy atom techniques and refined by full-matrix least- squares analyses to conventional R values of 0.037 [(A), 8845 independent reflections] and 0.028 [(B), 5291 independent reflections]. Important bond lengths [Ǻ] are Ir -P(trans to Cl ) 2.249(1) av. (A) and 2.234(1) (B), Ir -P(trans to PMe2Ph) 2.339(2) av. (A) and 2.344(1), 2.352(1) (B), Ir-Cl (trans to H) 2.492(2), 2.518(2) (A) and 2.503(1) (B) and Ir-Cl (trans to PMe2Ph)2.452(2) av. (A) and 2.449(1)(B). Differences in chemically equivalent metal- ligand bond lengths emphasize the importance of non-bonded contacts in determining those lengths.

The crystal structures of the complexes (SP-4-2)-cis-bis[8-(dimethylphosphanyl)quinoline-κ2 N,P]nickel(II) bis(perchlorate) nitromethane monosolvate, [Ni(C11H12NP)2](ClO4)2·CH3NO2 (1), and (SP-4-2)-cis-bis[8-(dimethylphosphanyl)quinoline-κ2 N,P]platinum(II) bis(tetrafluoroborate) acetonitrile monosolvate, [Pt(C11H12NP)2](BF4)2·C2H3N (2), are reported. In both complex cations, two phosphanylquinolines act as bidentate P,N-donating chelate ligands and form the mutually cis configuration in the square-planar coordination geometry. The strong trans influence of the dimethylphosphanyl donor group is confirmed by the Ni—N bond lengths in 1, 1.970 (2) and 1.982 (2) Å and, the Pt—N bond lengths of 2, 2.123 (4) and 2.132 (4) Å, which are relatively long as compared to those in the analogous 8-(diphenylphosphanyl)quinoline complexes. Mutually cis-positioned quinoline donor groups would give a severe steric hindrance between their ortho-H atoms. In order to reduce such a steric congestion, the NiII complex in 1 shows a tetrahedral distortion of the coordination geometry, as parameterized by τ4 = 0.199 (1)°, while the PtII complex in 2 exhibits a typical square-planar coordination geometry [τ4 = 0.014 (1)°] with a large bending deformation of the ideally planar Me2Pqn chelate planes. In the crystal structure of 2, three F atoms of one of the BF4 − anions are disordered over two sets of positions with refined occupancies of 0.573 (10) and 0.427 (10).

We have performed density functional calculations with the B3LYP functional and a 6-311G** basis set to obtain the vibrational spectra in harmonic approximation of the anti-leprosy drug Dapsone and the parent compound diphenylsulfone. Although the chemical difference between the two molecules is not that pronounced (Dapsone has amino groups in the para positions in the phenyl rings), Dapsone is an active drug, while to our knowledge diphenylsulfone shows no medical activity. We compared the theoretical results to experimental vibrational spectra found in the literature. With the help of the program GAUSSVIEW we were able to assign the experimentally found spectral lines to specific atomic motions. The remarkable difference between the two molecules, regarding their structural behavior, is that the drug Dapsone has a more flexible structure of the phenyl ring than the parent molecule has. This might contribute to a greater ability of the drug to fit into receptor sites in a cell membrane although one has to be well aware that this plays most propably only a minor role in the drug activity of Dapsone

The structures of [Pt(S2CN(C2H5)2)2] (1) and [Pt(S2CN(C2H4OH)2)2] (2) have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffractometry. Compound (1) crystallizes in the tetragonal space group P42/n, a 16.4692(10),c 6.2160(6) (Z = 4); R was 0.029 for 1012 observed reflections. Compound (2) is monoclinic, space group Pc, a 6-0663(11), b 1.1784(15), c 12.5740(21) ,β92.569(8) (Z = 2); R was 0.019 for 1573 observed reflections. The presence of electron-withdrawing groups in the ligands of (2) appears to have little effect on the Pt-S distances but causes an increase in the C-N bond length, with the C-N bond lengths being significantly different at the 2 σ level.

The molecular structures and electron affinities of the R – S / R – S -( R = CH 3, C 2 H 5, n- C 3 H 7, n- C 4 H 9, n- C 5 H 11, i- C 3 H 7, i- C 4 H 9, t- C 4 H 9) species have been studied using 17 pure and hybrid density functionals (five generalized gradient approximation (GGA) methods, six hybrid GGAs, one meta GGA method and five hybrid meta GGAs). The basis set used in this work is of double-ζ plus polarization quality with additional diffuse s- and p-type functions, denoted by DZP++. The geometries are fully optimized with each DFT method and discussed. Harmonic vibrational frequencies are found to be within 3.5% of available experimental values for most functionals. Three different types of the neutral-anion energy separations have been presented. The theoretical electron affinities of alkylthio radicals are in good agreement with the experiment data. The M06 method is very good for the adiabatic electron affinity calculations, and the average absolute error is 0.0439 eV. The HCTH method performs better for EA prediction. The M06-HF, mPWPW91, VSXC and B98 are also reasonable. The most reliable adiabatic electron affinities are predicted to be 1.864 eV ( CH 3 S ), 1.946 eV ( C 2 H 5 S ), 1.959 eV (n- C 3 H 7 S ), 1.970 eV (n- C 4 H 9 S ), 1.982 eV (n- C 5 H 11 S ), 2.053 eV (i- C 3 H 7 S ), 1.991 eV (i- C 4 H 9 S ) and 2.100 eV (t- C 4 H 9 S ) at the M06/DZP++ level of theory, respectively.
