Abstract Drought events will become more frequent due the climate change. In floodplains, periphytic algae are responsible for part of the primary production, are the principal source of organic carbon deposition, play an important role in mineralization and nutrient cycling, and are the base of the food web for many organisms. As algae distribution in aquatic environments is a strong indicator of physical and chemical conditions of the sites, we aimed to determine the structure of periphytic algae in lentic and lotic environments during drought conditions and to uncover the main local abiotic factors in community structuring. We hypothesized diatoms would be more frequent than green algae and desmids at both sites, due to their resistance characteristics, and that higher periphyton algal richness, density and diversity would occur in the lake due to the greater availability of nutrients and the absence of flow. The study was carried out in the Finado Raimundo lake and the Ivinhema river in the Upper Paraná river floodplain during the low water period of 2011. Petioles of the aquatic macrophyte Eichhornia azurea (Sw.) Kunth were used as a substrate for periphytic algae. We found a total of 171 species, 104 species in the lake and 80 in the river. Diatoms were predominant at both sites due to their strategic traits, and between sites, there were different patterns in the periphytic algal community structure, owing to the distinctive physical and chemical characteristics of the lake and the river. Achnanthidium minutissimum (Kützing) Czarnecki and Nitzschia palea (Kützing) W. Smith were the most abundant species in both environments. Our results showed patterns of periphytic algae in a floodplain during drought conditions, which will assist in understanding their structuring during future drought scenarios.

This study aimed to analyse the composition and the ecological attributes of small-sized fish assemblages in four lagoons and in the main channel of Rosana Reservoir (SE Brazil). Fieldwork was carried out in September and November/2004 and January, March, May and August/2005. In each sampling station and period five manual throws were performed towards aquatic macrophyte stands, using a hand net (1.5 × 5 m; 0.3 cm of mesh size). The ichthyofauna collected was represented by 42 species, totalizing 3,424 individuals, 2,186 g in weight. The order Characiformes was dominant, mainly in the lagoons with low connectivity with the river. The main taxon (Importance Index) was Hemigrammus marginatus. Higher richness, abundance, biomass, diversity and lower individual mean length were observed in the lagoons, especially during the rainy period. Spatial segregation of some species was showed by the canonical correspondence analysis indicating the habitat complexity. The results validate the hypotheses that lateral lagoons have a prominent ecological role in the life cycle of juveniles and small fish and demonstrate how the connectivity river/lagoons may be important for assemblages maintenance.

AIM: This study aimed to evaluate the algal periphytic community structure on substrates with differing surface roughness in early and longer-term colonization; METHODS: Periphyton was sampled after 30 days (June 24 to July 24, 2008) and 5 days (July 07 to July 12, 2010) substrate exposure during dry season. Plastic slides were used as artificial substrate. Treatments were smooth surface (control), low roughness, medium roughness and high roughness. Samples were collected for limnological condition and periphyton (chlorophyll-a, AFDM, algal biovolume and density, species richness and diversity) analysis; RESULTS: Periphytic biomass, algal density and biovolume had no significant difference among treatments after 30 and 5 days colonization time. Taxonomic similarity was the lowest among treatments and the greatest difference occurred between control and treatments with roughness surface. Bacillariophyceae biovolume decreased with increasing surface roughness. Adherence forms, algal classes and species descriptors were significantly different after 5 days colonization time, especially in medium e high roughness surface. In the colonization advanced phase only species descriptors differ among treatments. Periphytic algae with pads and stalks for adherence decreased with increasing surface roughness. CONCLUSION: Substrate physical properties had little or no influence on periphyton biomass accumulation, total density and biovolume in this study, but algal assemblages were sensitive to changes in the microtopography. More studies are needed to increase understanding of the relation substrate-periphyton in tropical ecosystems.
