The Relationship

This study was designed to examine the mediating role of meta-cognitions in the relationship between perceived expressed emotions and hallucination proneness in a non-clinical sample. The study sample (n = 432 university students) was selected through a stratified cluster sampling procedure and measures of perceived expressed emotions, metacognitive beliefs and hallucination proneness were administered. Two dimensions of expressed emotion, perceived irritability and perceived intrusion, and two metacognitive beliefs, beliefs about uncontrollability and danger and beliefs about cognitive confidence were found to be associated with hallucination proneness. However, only negative beliefs about uncontrollability of thoughts mediated the relationship between perceived intrusiveness and hallucination proneness. Findings imply the experience of real or perceived parental intrusiveness may activate negative beliefs about thoughts concerning uncontrollability and danger, which in turn, leads to hallucinatory experiences as a coping strategy and contributes to the persistence of real or perceived career intrusiveness.International Journal of Life Sciences 10 (1) : 2016; 17-24

Background: In the context of social marketing, the effectiveness of prevention messages is a major issue. The main objective of the present study was to assess the effect of prevention messages framing on self-efficacy reinforcement in order to improve intentions to reach or maintain sufficient weight in a non-clinical sample. It thus focuses on testing the mediating role of self-efficacy. Methods: Two hundred and thirty-three university student women were randomly assigned to one of the two conditions (gain-framed versus loss-framed message). They were exposed to a short persuasive message and surveyed on self-efficacy and intention to maintain sufficient weight. Results: Loss-framed messages elicited higher levels of self-efficacy than gain-framed messages, which led to higher intentions to reach or maintain sufficient weight. This study sheds light on the mediating role of self-efficacy. Conclusions: The results suggest ways to improve the persuasiveness of prevention campaigns, thereby opening up further research avenues.

Abstract. Background: Somatosensory amplification involves perceptual sensitivity to and cognitive-affective interpretation of bodily sensations and external stimuli, contributing to heightened experiences of somatic symptoms. However, little is known about somatosensory amplification in relation to vulnerabilities such as attachment insecurity. Aims: The present study investigated the link between attachment insecurity and somatosensory amplification, including the mediating role of dysfunctional interpersonal behaviors. Method: A sample of 245 adult community members completed the Somatosensory Amplification Scale, Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale, and abbreviated versions of the Experiences in Close Relationships scale and Inventory of Interpersonal Problems. Correlational and regression analyses were used to examine relations among study variables, including a hypothesized parallel mediation model. Results: Somatosensory amplification was significantly associated with attachment anxiety, but not attachment avoidance. Regression analyses, controlling for general anxiety symptoms and gender, found that interpersonal sensitivity (but not aggression or ambivalence) mediated the link between attachment anxiety and somatosensory amplification. Limitations: Study limitations include the use of cross-sectional data and a non-clinical sample. Conclusion: The findings indicate that somatosensory amplification may be related to individuals’ attachment anxiety, through the mediating effect of interpersonal sensitivity problems.
