Preservation of mental health in old age is an important area of research in modern psychology and psychiatry. The article discusses possible reasons for the decline in mental health of elderly people and the search for factors that would contribute to the preservation of mental health in the post-labor period. It is noted that a significant role herein is given to environmental factors. The study showed that self-acceptance, acceptance of others, internality, optimal level of self-esteem (adequacy), moderate external activity, self-realization, emotional comfort, optimistic attitude to the future, interest in social problems are the main factors of mental health preservation in old age. Women are more socialized in society than men, so men are more likely to be at risk.

SYNOPSISA five-year sample of suicide deaths in 82 county boroughs in England and Wales has been examined according to the age and sex of the victims. A number of demographic and other factors were chosen to test out the hypothesis that male suicides were more likely to be associated with other forms of violent death in the community and that female suicides would correlate with a number of variables measuring aspects of sociosexual life. In old age it was postulated that mental and physical illness would outweigh any environmental factors—apart from social isolation—as contributory causes to suicide by both sexes. The fmdings give limited support to the original hypothesis which needs to be checked by a sociomedical investigation of as many suicides as possible in a large number of towns.

Development is a dynamic process starting from prenatal period and lasting for life. In order to understand development, some basic concepts such as development, growth, progress, change, maturation, learning, readiness, period, critical period, time, and historical time should be mentioned. To understand development, it is necessary to know the principle of development. Development is affected by biological and many environmental factors. It is accepted that development is a product of heredity and environment. The periods of development, which take part in the life of the individual and defined with certain characteristics, are classified as prenatal, infancy, early childhood, middle childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and old age. Development is examined by branching such as physical, motor, cognitive, language, social and emotional, personality, moral, perceptual development, and sexual development. Families and educators play an important role in supporting the development of children. Ethics is a very sensitive issue in child development.

Abstract The global prevalence of obesity has been rising at an alarming rate, accompanied by an increase in both childhood and maternal obesity. The concept of metabolic programming is highly topical, and in this context, describes a predisposition of offspring of obese mothers to the development of obesity independent of environmental factors. Research published in this issue of Clinical Science conducted by Litzenburger and colleagues (Clin. Sci. (Lond.) (2020) 134, 921–939) have identified sex-dependent differences in metabolic programming and identify putative signaling pathways involved in the differential phenotype of adipose tissue between males and females. Delineating the distinction between metabolically healthy and unhealthy obesity is a topic of emerging interest, and the precise nature of adipocytes are key to pathogenesis, independent of adipose tissue volume.

The World Health Organization's (WHO's) 2001 International Classification of Functioning Disability and Health (ICF) has as one of its central tenets the full inclusion of persons with disabilities in society. It acknowledges the need for medical and rehabilitation intervention in its biopscychosocial framework. However, the WHO realizes that society must do its part to facilitate this full participation and empowerment. Persons with complex communication needs (PWCCN) often need augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) in order to express themselves. However, in order to access and successfully use AAC, PWCCN need access to the necessary AAC devices and services, as well as a willing society to interact with them as full contributing members of society. The factors outside of a person's specific physical and/or cognitive functional limitations are addressed in the ICF via the Personal and Environmental Factors. Personal Factors include the individual's personality traits, lifestyle, experiences, social/educational/professional background, race, gender, and age. Environmental Factors include community support systems, social service agencies, governments, social networks, and those persons that interact with the PWCCN. This article addresses the sociopolitical influences on PWCCN and their functioning from a human rights perspective. The necessary introspective role of speech-language pathologists in this process is explored.
