Near-wall profiles of mean flow and turbulence quantities predicted by eddy-viscosity turbulence models

In this paper an assessment of the improvement in the prediction of complex turbomachinery flows using a new near-wall Reynolds-stress model is attempted. The turbulence closure used is a near-wall low-turbulence-Reynolds-number Reynolds-stress model, that is independent of the distance-from-the-wall and of the normal-to-the-wall direction. The model takes into account the Coriolis redistribution effect on the Reynolds-stresses. The five mean flow equations and the seven turbulence model equations are solved using an implicit coupled OΔx3 upwind-biased solver. Results are compared with experimental data for three turbomachinery configurations: the NTUA high subsonic annular cascade, the NASA_37 rotor, and the RWTH 1 1/2 stage turbine. A detailed analysis of the flowfield is given. It is seen that the new model that takes into account the Reynolds-stress anisotropy substantially improves the agreement with experimental data, particularily for flows with large separation, while being only 30 percent more expensive than the k−ε model (thanks to an efficient implicit implementation). It is believed that further work on advanced turbulence models will substantially enhance the predictive capability of complex turbulent flows in turbomachinery.

Turbulence modeling remains an active CFD development front for turbomachinery as well as for general industrial applications. While DNS and even LES still seem out of reach within the typical industrial design cycle due to their high computational cost, RANS-based models remain the workhorse of CFD. Currently, the most widely used models are Linear Eddy-Viscosity Models (LEVM), despite their known limitations for certain flow complexities. Therefore, extending the reliability of eddy-viscosity models to more complex flows without significantly increasing the computational cost can immediately contribute to more reliable CFD results for wider range of applications. This, in turn, can further reduce the need for costly tests and consequently can reduce the product development cost. A promising approach to achieve this goal is using Explicit Algebraic Reynolds Stress Models (EARSM), obtained through a simplification of the full Differential Reynolds Stress Models (DRSM), and can be perceived as an extension of LEVMs by including the non-linear relation between the turbulence stress tensor, the mean-flow gradient and the turbulence scales. These models are thus less demanding than DRSM, yet capable of capturing more complex turbulence features, compared to LEVM, such as anisotropy in the normal stresses. This may be particularly important in corner flows, for instance, in the hub-blade regions or in diffusers. This work explores the application of EARSM models to a double diffuser and a high-performance centrifugal compressor stage (HPCC). The results are compared to available experimental data [1,2] showing the importance of including the anisotropy of turbulence in the model, particularly in presence of turbulent corner flows in a diffuser. Furthermore, the EARSM results are also compared to results from the commonly used SST turbulence model. The CFD comparison includes details of the flow structure in the diffuser, where the most noticeable impact from the use of EARSM turbulence models is expected.

While Reynolds-averaged simulatons (RAS) have found success in the evaluation of many canonical shear flows, and moderately separated flows, their application to highly separated flows have shown notable deficiencies. This study aims to investigate these deficiencies in the eddy-viscosity formulation of four commonly used turbulence models under separated flow in an attempt to aid in the improved formulation of such models. Analyses are performed on the flow field around a wall mounted cube at a Reynolds number of 40,000 based on the cube height, h, and free stream velocity, U0. While a common occurrence in industrial applications, this type of flow constitutes a complex structure exhibiting a large separated wake region, high anisotropy, and multiple vortex structures. As well, interactions between vortices developed off of different faces of the cube significantly alter the overall flow characteristics, posing a significant challenge for the commonly used industrial turbulence models. Comparison of mean flow characteristics show remarkable agreement between experimental values and turbulence models which are capable of predicting transitional flow. Evaluation of turbulence parameters show the general underestimation of Reynolds stress for transitional models, while fully turbulent models show this value to be overestimated, resulting in completely disparate representations of mean flow structures between the two classes of models (transitional and fully turbulent).

The k–ε and k–l eddy viscosity turbulence models are now used extensively in environmental flow modelling. In the present work computations for oscillatory flows are examined over a broader range of experimental parameters than considered previously. Comparisons are made with field measurements and laboratory data, including new measurements reported here for the first time. It is confirmed that the bed friction velocity and mean flow profiles are, in general, adequately predicted by both models (the k–ε model is, however, somewhat more accurate than the k–l formulation). Reynolds shear stress, turbulent kinetic energy, and eddy viscosity are less well predicted, although the k–ε model again gives more accurate results than the k–l model. An attempt has been made to assess the uncertainty in the experimental data for Reynolds stress and eddy viscosity: it is found that the k–ε model computations for both quantities more frequently lie within the estimated uncertainty bounds. Those bounds are nonetheless wide, emphasizing the need for improved experimental resolution of rough bed flows. Such an improvement would assist in the evaluation of proposed refinements to commonly used turbulence models such as those under investigation here and, indeed, to greater reliability in the development and assessment of more sophisticated schemes.

The paper presents recent trends in modeling jets in crossflow with relevance to film cooling of turbine blades. The aim is to compare two classes of turbulence models with respect to their predictive performance in reproducing near-wall flow physics and heat transfer. The study focuses on anisotropic eddy-viscosity/diffusivity models and explicit algebraic stress models, up to cubic fragments of strain and vorticity tensors. The first class of models are direct numerical simulation (DNS) based two-layer approaches transcending the conventional k−ε model by means of a nonisotropic representation of the turbulent transport coefficients; this is employed in connection with a near-wall one-equation model resolving the semi-viscous sublayer. The aspects of this new strategy are based on known channel-flow and boundary layer DNS statistics. The other class of models are quadratic and cubic explicit algebraic stress formulations rigorously derived from second-moment closures. The stress-strain relations are solved in the context of a two-layer strategy resolving the near-wall region by means of a nonlinear one-equation model; the outer core flow is treated by use of the two-equation model. The models are tested for the film cooling of a flat plate by a row of streamwise injected jets. Comparison of the calculated and measured wall-temperature distributions shows that only the anisotropic eddy-viscosity/diffusivity model can correctly predict the spanwise spreading of the temperature field and reduce the strength of the secondary vortices. The wall-cooling effectiveness was found to essentially depend on these two particular flow features. The non-linear algebraic stress models were of a mixed quality in film-cooling calculations.

The algebraic anisotropic eddy viscosity model proposed by the authors is further developed to make it suitable to the full flow field in order to focus not only in the near wall region but also in the main flow field. The three anisotropic eddy viscosity ratios for u′v′, u′w′, v′w′ are determined from the eddy viscosity hypothesis and algebraic Reynolds stress transport equations and expressed in Cartesian coordinate system. This model is applied to four isotropic two-equation turbulence models to make them anisotropic. These anisotropic models are validated with the experiment data from Sinha et al.[1]. Thorough tests are performed with all these isotropic and anisotropic turbulence models for film cooling on a flatplate with different blowing ratios. Detailed analyses of computational simulations are presented. The predicted adiabatic film cooling effectiveness and mean flow field show that the algebraic anisotropic eddy-viscosity turbulence models agree better with the experiment data. Among the four anisotropic models, the anisotropic models based on the realizable k-ε and RNG k-ε models stand out as the most promising models for flatplate film cooling predictions. It’s a big advantage of this model that it deals with the whole flow field and can be combined with different turbulence models.

In this study three-dimensional simulations of a stator vane passage flow have been performed using the v2¯−f turbulence model. Both an in-house code (CALC-BFC) and the commercial software FLUENT are used. The main objective is to investigate the v2¯−f model’s ability to predict the secondary fluid motion in the passage and its influence on the heat transfer to the end walls between two stator vanes. Results of two versions of the v2¯−f model are presented and compared to detailed mean flow field, turbulence, and heat transfer measurements. The performance of the v2¯−f model is also compared with other eddy-viscosity-based turbulence models, including a version of the v2¯−f model, available in FLUENT. The importance of preventing unphysical growth of turbulence kinetic energy in stator vane flows, here by use of the realizability constraint, is illustrated. It is also shown that the v2¯−f model predictions of the vane passage flow agree well with experiments and that, among the eddy-viscosity closures investigated, the v2¯−f model, in general, performs the best. Good agreement between the two different implementations of the v2¯−f model (CALC-BFC and FLUENT) was obtained.
