This article addresses the development of a bench-scale test (jetfire lab) mimicking the fire exposure of the large-scale jetfire facility. An experimental approach was addressed to develop direct correlation and to validate the similitude between bench-scale test and large-scale jetfire. Comparisons were made by testing Zaltex passive fire protection material in the form of panels. Novel setups were designed to make the jetfire lab able to measure time/temperature curves similar to those obtained at a large scale. The assembly of the tested samples was also investigated. An experimental protocol was elaborated to consider the junction between parts of the sample at the reduced scale. Direct correlation was found between the large and the bench scale and it was evidenced that jetfire lab can be used for preliminary study and development of new thermal barriers for fire protection.

The unconventionality of the cold-formed steel (CFS) structures raised, in recent times, a lot of interest from many national and international companies resulting in the promotion of experimental activity with the main aim of investigating the seismic behaviour of these systems. In this perspective, a research project carried out at the University of Naples “Federico II” and funded by Lamieredil S.p.A. company started in the last years. The study included an extended experimental campaign, involving shake table tests on two three-storey prototypes in reduced scale (1:3). The investigated lateral load resisting systems were CFS strap-braced stud walls, designed as low dissipative seismic structures. The present paper illustrates case study, prototypes, test program and main shake table tests results.

Currently, there is a limitation in the performance evaluation of a large fireproof shutter due to the constraint of the maximum size of the test equipment (3 m × 3 m). In particular, the longer the maximum span of a large fireproof shutter, the greater the fire load. Accordingly, the deformation of the large fireproof shutter is increased. The fire fragile area between the guide rails at both ends of the large fireproof shutter and the body of the fireproof shutter increases, and at the same time, the possibility of flame passing through the fragile area increases. However, the reduced-scale test is performed without reflecting the above-mentioned problems, and the maximum span of 8 m specified in KS F 4510 is widely used. Therefore, the author suggests a new method for performance evaluation of large-scale fireproof shutter, which can reflect the fire vulnerabilities of large fireproof shutter with increasing span.

This paper deals with the energy management control of a PV-Diesel-ESS-based microgrid in a stand-alone context. In terms of control, an Isolated Mode Control (IMC) strategy based on a resonant regulator is proposed. In Parallel Mode Control (PMC) conditions, the diesel generator (DG) is controlled to operate at its nominal power. In this context, a supervisory algorithm optimizing the power flow between the microgrid’s various components ensures switching between the two modes for different possible scenarios. To prove the effectiveness of the proposed control strategies, the energy management control (EMC) is tested first using a standard state of charge (SOC) profile emulating the microgrid different states. Then real data are used to simulate the load and solar radiations. An experimental validation on a reduced scale test bench is carried out to prove the feasibility and the effectiveness of the proposed energy management control strategies.

The sense of place is like a mental perception of people individuals and the conscious feeling of the environment and the entrance as important signs cause the formation of mental image and the continuity of sense of belonging to the place in people. The character that the entrance takes is an important factor for the connection between inside and outside the building. The research question is what are the criteria for recognizing entrance architecture? And how have these criteria been able to improve the continuity of the sense of belonging to the place in the inhabitants of the historical context of Kashan? In the architecture of Kashan’s houses, entrance space as a conceptual element has high importance and reflects the architectural, cultural, and social values. This important element, which is based on behavioral patterns, has lost its identity today and has been reduced scale to a separating outside from inside. Studies show that integration and integrity, the radius of vision, and visual depth are three important indices designed based on them. This research through case study and using Depth map software has examined these characteristics at the entrance of nine historical houses in Kashan. The results show that the design of these entrances has the highest degree of coherence and a maximum radius of view and due to high visual depth have high privacy.
