Welded metal porosity significantly influences the mechanical properties of dissimilar metal joints. In this study, the comparison of porosity evaluation methods was held using the sample of welded-brazed zinc coated steel and Al-Mg-alloy plates joint. Relative porosity was measured through cross-sections’ images area analysis, as well as it was evaluated through 3D-fitting of spotted on these images pores. Area and size of pores was measured, volume and distribution were evaluated. It was found that relative porosity values estimated by 2D and 3D methods are equal.

Depth-sensing indentation (DSI) is used in this work to determine the change of local mechanical properties by annealing of hot-dip galvanized IF steel sheets. The influence of annealing conditions (temperature and time) on: (i) coating composition; (ii) local mechanical properties and (iii) roughness of the coating surface was quantified. Annealing of steel samples (Ti-IF steel and Ti-Nb-P-IF steel alloyed with phosphorus) was performed with different holding times (10, 60, and 300 s) by both temperatures 450 and 550 °C. The zinc in coating transformed during annealing to the intermetallic phases ZnxFey. Annealed Zn-Fe coatings, wherein the iron concentration falls towards the surface, consist of different intermetallic phases.

As the limit of traditional contact measurement, it is difficult to precisely measure the steel cables twisted by a branch of wires especially at elevated temperature. In this paper the strain-stress relationships of S355 and S690 structural steel, 1860 MPa steel cable twisted by seven wires have been measured by the strain gauge, extensometer and non-contact video gauge at ambient temperature and elevated temperature, respectively. Comparison of the stress-strain curves gotten by different measuring technology, it indicates that the non-contact video gauge can provide a more efficient and reliable database than the strain gauge as well as extensometer, especially at an elevated temperature. It is worth noting that the non-contact video gauge can capture not only the full range of stress-strain curves of steel cables, but is also efficient for the specimens with a complex shape.

Dissimilar metals joints between aluminum and zinc-coated steel were joined by CMT machine with ER4043 filler metal. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the joints obtained with different heat input were analyzed. The results showed that the thickness of interfacial intermetallic compound was determined by the welding heat input. Tensile specimens were broken in HAZ of aluminum base metal and the tensile strength of the joint can reach 122.3MPa.
