The article describes the results of the study concerning the effect of the voltage level on current harmonic composition in greenhouses irradiators. It is found that its change affects the level of current harmonics of all types of the studied greenhouse irradiators. With decrease of nominal supply voltage by 10 %, the total harmonic distortion THDi decreases by 9 % for emitters equipped with high pressure sodium lamps (HPSL), by 10 % for emitters with electrode-less lamps and by 3 % for LED based emitters. With increase of nominal supply voltage by 10 %, THDi increases by 23 % for lighting devices equipped with HPSL, by 10 % for irradiators with electrode-less lamps and by 3 % for LED based emitters. Therefore, changes of supply voltage cause the least effect on the level of current harmonics of LED based emitters and then the emitters with electrode-less lamps. Change of the level of supply voltage causes the greatest effect on the level of current harmonics of HPSL based irradiators. Mathematical models of dependence of THDi on the level of supply voltage for greenhouse emitters equipped with LED, electrode-less lamps and HPSL lamps were formulated. These mathematical models may be used for calculations of total current when selecting transformers and supply cable lines for greenhouse lighting devices, for design of new or reconstruction of existing irradiation systems of greenhouse facilities, and for calculation of power losses in power supply networks of greenhouse facilities during feasibility studies for energy saving and energy efficiency increasing projects.

This paper develops a full-bridge DC-AC converter, which uses a robust optimal tracking control strategy to procure a high-quality sine output waveshape even in the presence of unpredictable intermissions. The proposed strategy brings out the advantages of non-singular fast convergent terminal attractor (NFCTA) and chaos particle swarm optimization (CPSO). Compared with a typical TA, the NFCTA affords fast convergence within a limited time to the steady-state situation, and keeps away from the possibility of singularity through its sliding surface design. It is worth noting that once the NFCTA-controlled DC-AC converter encounters drastic changes in internal parameters or the influence of external non-linear loads, the trembling with low-control precision will occur and the aggravation of transient and steady-state performance yields. Although the traditional PSO algorithm has the characteristics of simple implementation and fast convergence, the search process lacks diversity and converges prematurely. So, it is impossible to deviate from the local extreme value, resulting in poor solution quality or search stagnation. Thereby, an improved version of traditional PSO called CPSO is used to discover global optimal NFCTA parameters, which can preclude precocious convergence to local solutions, mitigating the tremor as well as enhancing DC-AC converter performance. By using the proposed stable closed-loop full-bridge DC-AC converter with a hybrid strategy integrating NFCTA and CPSO, low total harmonic distortion (THD) output-voltage and fast dynamic load response are generated under nonlinear rectifier-type load situations and during sudden load changes, respectively. Simulation results are done by the Matlab/Simulink environment, and experimental results of a digital signal processor (DSP) controlled full-bridge DC-AC converter prototype confirm the usefulness of the proposed strategy.

Electric variable speed drives (VSD) have been replacing mechanic and hydraulic systems in many sectors of industry and transportation because of their better performance and reduced cost. However, the electric systems still face the issue of being considered less reliable than the mechanical ones. For this reason, researchers have been actively investigating effective ways to increase the reliability of such systems. This paper is focused on the analysis of the common-mode voltage (CMV) generated by the operation of the VSDs which directly affects to the lifetime and reliability of the complete system. The method is based on the mathematical description of the harmonic spectrum of the CMV depending on the PWM method implementation. A generalized PWM method where the carriers present a variable phase-displacement is developed. As a result of the presented analysis, the CMV reduction is achieved by applying the PWM method with optimal carrier phase-displacement angles without any external component and/or passive filtering technique. The optimal values of the carrier phase-displacement angles are obtained considering the minimization of the CMV total harmonic distortion. The resulting method is easily implementable on mostly off-the-shelf mid-range micro-controller control platforms. The strategy has been evaluated in a scaled-down experimental setup proving its good performance.

AbstractThe purpose of this paper is to describe the design of a Hybrid Series Active Power Filter (HSeAPF) system to improve the quality of power on three-phase power distribution grids. The system controls are comprise of Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) based on the Synchronous Reference Frame (SRF) theory, and supported by Phase Locked Loop (PLL) for generating the switching pulses to control a Voltage Source Converter (VSC). The DC link voltage is controlled by Non-Linear Sliding Mode Control (SMC) for faster response and to ensure that it is maintained at a constant value. When this voltage is compared with Proportional Integral (PI), then the improvements made can be shown. The function of HSeAPF control is to eliminate voltage fluctuations, voltage swell/sag, and prevent voltage/current harmonics are produced by both non-linear loads and small inverters connected to the distribution network. A digital Phase Locked Loop that generates frequencies and an oscillating phase-locked output signal controls the voltage. The results from the simulation indicate that the HSeAPF can effectively suppress the dynamic and harmonic reactive power compensation system. Also, the distribution network has a low Total Harmonic Distortion (< 5%), demonstrating that the designed system is efficient, which is an essential requirement when it comes to the IEEE-519 and IEC 61,000–3-6 standards.

In this paper, the virtual synchronous generator (VSG) concept is utilized in the controller of the grid-connected dual two-level voltage source inverter (DTL VSI). First, the topology of the VSG and the DTL VSI are presented. Then, the state-space equations of the DTL VSI and the grid-connected two-level voltage source inverter (TL VSI), regarding the presence of the phase-locked loop (PLL) and the VSG, are given. Next, the small-signal modeling of the DTL VSI and the TL VSI is realized. Eventually, the stability enhancement in the DTL VSI compared with the TL VSI is demonstrated. In the TL VSI, large values of virtual inertia could result in oscillations in the power system. However, the ability of the DTL VSI in damping oscillations is deduced. Furthermore, in the presence of nonlinear loads, the potentiality of the DTL VSI in reducing grid current Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) is evaluated. Finally, by using a proper reference current command signal, the abilities of the DTL VSI and the TL VSI in supplying nonlinear loads and providing virtual inertia are assessed simultaneously. The simulation results prove the advantages of the DTL VSI compared with the TL VSI in virtual inertia emulation and oscillation damping, which are realized by small-signal analysis.
