We report the genome sequence ofExiguobacterium chiriqhuchastr. N139, isolated from a high-altitude Andean lake. Comparative genomic analyses of theExiguobacteriumgenomes available suggest that our strain belongs to the same species as the previously reportedE. pavilionensisstr. RW-2 andExiguobacteriumstr. GIC 31. We describe this species and propose thechiriqhuchaname to group them. ‘Chiri qhucha’ in Quechua means ‘cold lake’, which is a common origin of these three cosmopolitan Exiguobacteria. The 2,952,588-bpE. chiriqhuchastr. N139 genome contains one chromosome and three megaplasmids. The genome analysis of the Andean strain suggests the presence of enzymes that conferE. chiriqhuchastr. N139 the ability to grow under multiple environmental extreme conditions, including high concentrations of different metals, high ultraviolet B radiation, scavenging for phosphorous and coping with high salinity. Moreover, the regulation of its tryptophan biosynthesis suggests that novel pathways remain to be discovered, and that these pathways might be fundamental in the amino acid metabolism of the microbial community from Laguna Negra, Argentina.

Abstract Water-saturated vertebrate remains (e.g., bone, antler, and ivory) are particularly challenging to stabilize for long-term storage, research, and analysis. These types of specimens are sensitive to damage caused by water loss, which frequently results in delamination, twisting, and cracking. The recovery of late Quaternary vertebrate remains from underwater areas of Cold Lake, western Canada, prompted us to conduct a series of analyses to better understand the preservation of the remains and their susceptibility to damage, and to test different conservation techniques to achieve successful drying. X-ray fluorescence analysis of a sample of specimens revealed that the remains have particularly high iron concentrations, a condition that might have contributed to weaken their structure, further compromising their integrity when drying. Additionally, we found that certain bone elements, such as long bones, are more susceptible to severe surface delamination than others, and as a result these specimens should be monitored more closely during their treatment. Of the four drying methods we tested, controlled air-drying produced the best results, followed by solvent-drying. In contrast, vacuum freeze-drying and vacuum freeze-drying with 20% v/v Acrysol WS-24 in water, an acrylic dispersion, while rapid, resulted in differing degrees of delamination and cracking.

Passage of a bright bolide northeast of Edmonton near midnight on the evening of June 1, 1982, was recorded both photographically by three cameras of the Meteorite Observation and Recovery Project of the National Research Council of Canada and by seismic recording stations at Edmonton and Cold Lake. The photographic data indicate a path towards the northwest at an average height of about 80 km and an average speed of 28 km/s. The Cold Lake data make possible the determination of direction and velocity of approach of the sound wave as well as wave-front curvature in the horizontal plane. The data indicate an essentially zero curvature and a speed across the array of 337.8 m/s for the sound arrival.Wave-front curvature indicates a line source, being the nearly cylindrical shock wave from the hypervelocity bolide. Directions of approach at both Cold Lake and Edmonton, however, seem to indicate a direction more consistent with the end of the brightest segment of the meteor photograph.The discrepancy is not resolved at present, nor is the very slow apparent velocity towards both Cold Lake and Edmonton as derived from the traveltimes to each of the seismic stations.
