In the creep tests, stress is no longer a constant and increases gradually under the influence of damage occurring during accelerating creep, which is a slow-loading process rather than a conventional creep. With the accumulation of the damage over time, the actual stress increases greatly. The increased actual stress not only generates loading strain but also causes the steady creep rate to rise. This coupling possibly explains why salt rock presents nonlinear accelerating characteristics at the accelerating creep stage. In this work, the constraint of the present creep concept was overcome by assuming that the acceleration creep phase is a coupling process of loading and creeping. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the total strain in this phase is equal to the sum of loading strain and creeping strain. A new nonlinear constitutive equation for creep was then derived, and the mechanisms underlying the nonlinear accelerating characteristics emerging at the stage of accelerating creep are further explained. A step-loading experiment on salt rock was performed for a period of six months. The characteristics of accelerating creep appeared in the last step of loading. This new nonlinear creep damage constitutive model was used to fit and analyze the test data. Obtained results show that this model fits well to these test data and also favorably represents the nonlinear characteristics of accelerating creep, thus supporting the model’s validity.

Triaxial unloading creep tests of layered rock specimen of Jinping II hydropower station were carried out using the rock creep testing machine; thus the creep deformation curves under different confining pressures were acquired. The test results showed that, in addition to the obvious unloading creep characteristics of rock specimen, the nonlinear accelerating creep deformation emerged under the last stage confining stress condition, and the whole creep curves presented the typical rock creep three stages. On the other hand, the Burgers creep model constitutive equations under the three-dimensional stress state were also deduced. Based on the creep test data, through identifying the creep parameters using the optimized algorithm, the corresponding parameters of triaxial creep constitutive model were obtained. By comparative analysis of creep parameters, it can be concluded that creep parameters nonlinearly degraded with the decrease of confining pressure gradually. Moreover, when the load is below the long-term strength of rock, the creep parameters are only related to the unloading ratio, while in the case that the load is larger than the long-term strength of rock, the unloading creep parameters are related to both unloading ratio and creep time. According to the creep parameters under the first-stage stress level, and through introducing unloading ratio damage factor to describe the degrading rule of creep parameters on other stress levels, the method of uniformity determining the creep parameters was proposed. It was assumed that the damage degree in rock interior was relative to both unloading ratio and creep time; a nonlinear creep damage model of rock under unloading was proposed, which could better reflect the nonlinear characteristics of rock creep. The results showed that rock nonlinear creep damage model achieved perfectly consistent results with the creep test.

Concrete creep has become one of the major problems that threatens concrete structural development and construction. However, a reasonable and accurate calculation model for numerical analysis is the key to control and solve the creep deformation of concrete. To better describe the concrete nonlinear creep damage evolution rule, the visco-elasticity Plasticity Rheological Theory, Riemann Liouville Theory and Combined Model Theory are quoted, and the Able dashpot is used to reconstruct fractional-order soft-body composite elements to propose the expression of the stress-strain relationship of the elastomer, visco-elasticity plasticity body, and Viscoplasticity body, considering the evolution of the concrete compression damage process. A nonlinear creep damage constitutive model of concrete, based on fractional calculus theory, is conducted, and the parameters of the specific calculation method of the model are given. The influence of stress level σ, fractional order n and material parameter α on the concrete creep process is determined by a sensitivity analysis of the model parameters. The creep process and deformation amount of concrete in practical engineering can be effectively controlled by the results of the proposed sensitivity analysis. The research results can be used to provide guidance and reference for the safe construction of concrete engineering in actual practice.

Based on the results obtained by the triaxial creep test, a creep-damage constitutive model for sandstone is presented by using the damage theory and by introducing the concept of “the whole process of damage” into Burgers creep model. The parameters of the model are determined by fitting the creep test data. The result shows that the proposed model can not only describe efficiently the variation of decay and steady creep under relatively low stress condition, but also give a satisfied representation of damage behavior in accelerated creep stage.

An improved continuum damage constitutive model is presented to describe the creep behavior of centrifugally cast 20Cr32Ni1Nb stainless steel. In order to determine the internal softening mechanisms of the steel, microstructural observations of damage in 20Cr32Ni1Nb steel are made using the long-term iso-thermal aging treatment. Based on the physics of microstructural processes, a two state variable theory which represents two damage mechanisms related to particle coarsening and microcrack is employed to account for tertiary creep. The kinetic equation which describes the coarsening of the precipitates with time is coupled with Liu-Murakami creep damage constitutive model. Good agreement between predicted and experimental data proves the validity of the proposed model. Compared with the failure times predicted by power law based models, such as Kachanov-Robotnov and Liu-Murakami model, life predictions based on the proposed model are found to be more reasonable over a wide stress range. Additionally, the proposed model is also applied to analyze the accumulation and development of damage in 20Cr32Ni1Nb manifold components.

The use of salt rock for underground radioactive waste disposal facilities requires a comprehensive analysis of the creep-damage process in salt rock. A computer-controlled creep setup was employed to carry out a creep test of salt rock that lasted as long as 359 days under a constant uniaxial stress. The acoustic emission (AE) space-time evolution and energy-releasing characteristics during the creep test were studied in the meantime. A new creep-damage model is proposed on the basis of a fractional derivative by combining the AE statistical regularity. It indicates that the AE data in the non-decay creep process of salt rock can be divided into three stages. Furthermore, the authors propose a new creep-damage model of salt rock based on a fractional derivative. The parameters in the model were determined by the Quasi-Newton method. The fitting analysis suggests that the new creep-damage model provides a precise description of full creep regions in salt rock.

A damage-based creep constitutive model for a wide stress range is applied to the creep analysis of a 1000 MW ultra-supercritical steam turbine, the inlet steam of which reaches 600°C and 35 MPa. In this model, the effect of complex multi-axial stress and the nonlinear evolution of damage are considered. To this end, the model was implemented into the commercial software ABAQUS using a user-defined material subroutine code. The temperature dependent material constants were identified from the experimental data of advanced heat resistant steels using curve fitting approaches. A comparison of the simulated and the measured results showed that they reached an acceptable agreement. The results of the creep analysis illustrated that the proposed approach explains the basic features of stress redistribution and the damage evolution in the steam turbine rotor over a wide range of stresses and temperatures.
