Background: Ethyl lactate is an environmentally benign solvent, which could substitute petrol-based volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in many applications if production costs are reduced. It is usually produced by the esterification of lactic acid with ethanol – two important chemical building blocks of biorefineries that are available at industrial scale. Reactive distillation is a promising alternative production process, which utilises process intensification to increase energy efficiency and space-time yield by enhancing the reaction kinetics. Methods: In this work, process intensification of ethyl lactate production by means of distillation was analysed with special focus on the efficient separation of water. Different setups were evaluated. The feedstock requirements were studied and the process was optimized regarding reaction kinetics in experiments on laboratory level. The preparation of anhydrous starting mixtures for ethyl lactate formation was tested in batch experiments and applied to reactive distillation. The simultaneous distillation was optimized and assessed for its energy efficiency. For this purpose, integrated reactive distillation was compared to a simple setup for distillation enhanced esterification. Results: It was found that an optimized serial setup of reactors and distillation steps can offer similar process intensification at a lower distillate rate compared to simultaneous reactive distillation and is therefore more energy efficient. Moreover, the serial setup is more flexible and straight-forward to regulate and scale-up. Conclusions: Based on the experimental results, the optimal setup and parameters of a continuous process for ethyl lactate production by distillation enhanced esterification was presented.

One of the school's successes in reaching the title Adiwiyata is habitual school community in everyday life. These habits reflect whether they are environmentally friendly patterned or not. Adiwiyata is a program that forms the entire school community to characters that care for the environment. Creating a school that is clean, healthy, beautiful and ethics and aesthetics. With the knowledge and habits of students' awareness and eco-friendly lifestyle, it is the foundation for SMA Negeri 8 Kota Serang to be earned Adiwiyata. This study raised the issue of whether the program launched by the school for a degree Adiwiyata can increase knowledge and change the habits of students in energy efficiency. This research method using qualitative description, in which respondents were given questionnaires, interviews, and observations. However, the role that the school community is very important in realizing the success of the school to achieve Adiwiyata title. Thus the required environmental education activities that can form the students become the generation that can contribute to being part minded citizens who are environmentally.

This research responded to environmental issues that arise related to green design as the responsibility of architectural actors. A building is now required to have environmentally friendly values, one of that can be reflected in the energy efficiency of the building. Kudu Flats is one of the towers in the city of Semarang which had several blocks with different orientations. Related to these environmental issues, this study aimed to determine the level of energy efficiency in the Kudu flats with consideration of building orientation, openings and shading devices using quantitative methods based on edge design. This study revealed that flats blocks that have smaller openings in the east-west direction are more energy efficient and rotating the building orientation 15 ° from the wind direction will make the building more energy efficient.

Along with technological developments and population growth, the need for air conditioner (AC) is increasing, both those used in industry, offices, buildings, housing, vehicles, and others. In the use of AC, refrigerant is needed. Based on the Montreal agreement, it was agreed to replace refrigerants that are more environmentally friendly. The refrigerant used today is refrigerant with CFC and HCFC compounds. The use of those refrigerants result in ODP and GWP. This study aims to determine the energy efficiency of three refrigerants: R12, R134a, and MC134, by comparing the COP value of a refrigeration laboratory unit machine. Based on the test results, COP of MC134 refrigerant has the highest value compared to R12 and R134a refrigerants. Therefore, it can be concluded that MC134, a hydrocarbon refrigerant, could be considered as a substitute for R12 and R134 refrigerants, eventhough flammability of the hydrocarbons at certain temperatures should be considered also.
