Τwo new documented non-linear static (pushover) procedures on asymmetric single-storey R/C buildings are presented in detail herein, aiming directly at the Near Collapse state. Both procedures apply relative to the “Capable Near Collapse Principal reference system” of the single-storey building. The main objective of the two proposed procedures is to fully consider the coupling between torsional and translational vibrations of the floor-diaphragm under translational seismic excitation of the building’s base. The first pushover procedure, which is a Direct Displacement-Based one, uses floor enforced-displacements as action. In the second pushover procedure, which is a Force-Based one, the floor lateral static forces are applied eccentrically to centre of mass using suitable inelastic design eccentricities (dynamic plus accidental ones). The floor enforced-translations/rotation and the appropriate inelastic dynamic eccentricities used in the two proposed procedures derive from extensive parametric non-linear response history analysis and are given by figures or equations. In order to clarify in detail and evaluate the new pushover procedures, a torsionally-flexible, double-asymmetric, single-storey R/C building is seismically assessed. The validation of both procedures relative to the results of non-linear response history analysis shows that both predict with safety the in-plan displacements of the building.

Simplified analysis methods for seismically isolated structures proposed in recent structural codes and specifications are frequently used to reduce the computational effort and to simplify the design procedure, either directly for special cases or for checking the results of nonlinear response history analysis. Of the approximate methods, the equivalent lateral force procedure using the effective stiffness and effective damping is one of the best known. In this study, the simplified method is developed by combining the equivalent lateral force procedure with the capacity spectrum method and evaluated in terms of maximum isolator displacements and base shears for isolated structures with recently invented quintuple friction pendulum isolators , with different geometrical and frictional properties, under two different response spectra with corresponding two different sets of bidirectional near-field ground motions for stiff and soft soils site classes. In order to assess the accuracy of the simplified method, the delivered results of the ELF procedure are compared to those of nonlinear response history analysis, by modelling the quintuple friction pendulum isolator 3D element in OpenSees. Eventually, comments on the accuracy of the simplified method are given to make its applications more appropriate in practical design of base isolation systems.

This paper compares seismic displacement from the MOTEMS and the ASCE/COPRI 61-14 substitute structure method (SSM) with results from the nonlinear response history analysis (NLRHA). It is found that the SSM is biased toward overpredicting displacement demand for short-period systems and under-predicting displacement demand for long-period systems. The overprediction was found to be excessive for very-short period systems (i.e., systems with periods shorter than the period at which the design spectrum transitions from linearly increasing spectral acceleration to constant spectral acceleration). It is recommended that the SSM not be used for such systems. It is also recommended that the SSM not be used for long-period systems (i.e., systems with periods longer than the period at which the design spectrum transitions from constant spectral acceleration to constant spectral velocity), where it underpredicts displacement demand and may lead to unconservative design. The SSM provides reasonable results (within 20% of results from NLRHA) for systems with periods in the constant spectral acceleration region of the design spectrum.

There are currently no applicable hysteresis rules or nonlinear elements available in structural analysis software that can be used to exactly model triple Friction Pendulum bearings for response-history analysis. Series models composed of existing nonlinear elements are proposed since they can be immediately implemented in currently available analysis software. However, the behavior of the triple Friction Pendulum bearing is not exactly that of a series arrangement of single concave Friction Pendulum bearings—though it is similar. This paper describes how to modify the input parameters of the series model in order to precisely retrace the true force-displacement behavior exhibited by this device. Recommendations are made for modeling in SAP2000 and are illustrated through analysis of a simple seismically isolated structure. The results are confirmed by (a) verifying the force-displacement behavior through comparison with experimental data and (b) verifying the analysis through comparison to the results obtained by direct numerical integration of the equations of motion.

Abstract. The present paper investigates the influence of the orientation of recorded horizontal ground motion components on the longitudinal reinforcement of R/C frame elements within the context of linear response history analysis. For this purpose, three single-story buildings are analyzed and designed for 13 recorded bi-directional ground motions applied along the horizontal structural axes. The analysis and design is performed for several orientations of the recording angle of the horizontal seismic components. For each orientation the longitudinal reinforcement at all critical cross sections is calculated using four methods of selecting the set of internal forces needed to compute the required reinforcement. The results show that the reinforcement calculated by three of the applied methods is significantly affected by the orientation of the recording angle of ground motion, while the fourth one leads to results which are independent of the orientation of the recording angle.

Struktur rangka baja pemikul momen merupakan jenis struktur baja tahan gempa yang populer digunakan. Daktilitas struktur yang tinggi merupakan salah satu keunggulan struktur ini, sehingga mampu menahan deformasi inelastik yang besar. Dalam desain, penggunaan metode desain elastis berupa evaluasi non-linear static (Pushover analysis) maupun evaluasi non-linear analisis (Time History Analysis) masih digunakan sebagai dasar perencanaan meskipun perilaku struktur sebenarnya saat kondisi inelastik tidak dapat digambarkan dengan baik. Metode Performance-Based Plastic Design (PBPD) berkembang untuk melihat perilaku struktur sebenarnya dengan cara menetapkan terlebih dahulu simpangan dan mekanisme leleh struktur sehingga gaya geser dasar yang digunakan adalah sama dengan usaha yang dibutuhkan untuk mendorong struktur hingga tercapai simpangan yang telah direncanakan. Studi dilakukan terhadap struktur baja 5 lantai yang diberi beban gempa berdasarkan SNI 1726, 2012 dan berdasarkan metode PBPD. Hasil analisa menunjukkan bahwa struktur yang diberi gaya gempa berdasarkan metode PBPD mencapai simpangan maksimum sesuai simpangan rencana dan kinerja struktur yang dihasilkan lebih baik .
