Estimation of story drift directly from acceleration records for post‐earthquake safety evaluations of buildings

Reinforced concrete (RC) frame structures with open first stories and masonry infill walls at the upper stories are very common in seismic areas. Under strong earthquakes, most of the energy dissipation demand imposed by the earthquake concentrates in the first story, and this eventually leads the building to collapse. A very efficient and cost-effective solution for the seismic upgrading of this type of structure consists of installing hysteretic dampers in the first story. This paper investigates the response of RC soft-story frames retrofitted with hysteretic dampers subjected to near-fault ground motions in terms of maximum displacements and lateral seismic forces and compares them with those obtained by far-field earthquakes. It is found that for similar levels of total seismic input energy, the maximum displacements in the first story caused by near-fault earthquakes are about 1.3 times larger than those under far-field earthquakes, while the maximum inter-story drift in the upper stories and the distribution and values of the lateral forces are scarcely affected. It is concluded that the maximum displacements can be easily predicted from the energy balance of the structure by using appropriate values for the parameter that reflects the influence of the impulsivity of the ground motion: the so-called equivalent number of cycles.

After a major seismic event, structural safety inspections by qualified experts are required prior to reoccupying a building and resuming operation. Such manual inspections are generally performed by teams of two or more experts and are time consuming, labor intensive, subjective in nature, and potentially put the lives of the inspectors in danger. The authors reported previously on the system for a rapid post-earthquake safety assessment of buildings using sparse acceleration data. The proposed framework was demonstrated using simulation of a five-story steel building modeled with three-dimensional nonlinear analysis subjected to historical earthquakes. The results confirmed the potential of the proposed approach for rapid safety evaluation of buildings after seismic events. However, experimental validation on large-scale structures is required prior to field implementation. Moreover, an extension to the assessment of high-rise buildings, such as those commonly used for residences and offices in modern cities, is needed. To this end, a 1/3-scale 18-story experimental steel building tested on the shaking table at E-Defense in Japan is considered. The importance of online model updating of the linear building model used to calculate the Damage Sensitive Features (DSFs) during the operation is also discussed. Experimental results confirm the efficacy of the proposed approach for rapid post-earthquake safety evaluation for high-rise buildings. Finally, a cost-benefit analysis with respect to the number of sensors used is presented.

To study the effect of damping on seismic performance of steel frame, using the pseudo dynamic test by inputting damping and no damping to analyze the seismic performance of semi-rigid steel frame. Analysis was focused on the effect of damping on the panel zone strain, story drift and interlayer force.The conclusion was that under the more severe earthquake, the structural damping had effects on the seismic performance of semi-rigid steel frame.

This study presents the shake-table tests of a 1/5-scaled RC frame retrofitted with RC infill walls. The intensity of input ground motions increased gradually to comprehensively evaluate the structural seismic behavior. We performed a comparison of the results from the RC frame with masonry walls and that with RC walls. The results showed that the presence of RC infills effectively improved the lateral structural stiffness and loading capacity of the frames and reduced their damage and story drift. RC walls acted as the first seismic line of defense, and their failure was dominated by bending failure and concentrated on the low stories. The displacement ductility of the structure decreased with increasing stiffness of the introducing infills.

Abstract Some of the largest accelerations and velocities ever recorded at ground-response and structural sites occurred during the Northridge earthquake. These motions are greater than most existing attenuation models would have predicted. Although the motions are large, the correspondence between measured acceleration and damage requires further study, since some sites with high acceleration experienced only moderate damage. Also, some peak vertical accelerations were larger than the horizontal, but in general, they are smaller and fit the pattern observed in previous earthquakes. Strong-motion records processed to date show significant differences in acceleration and velocity waveforms and amplitudes across the San Fernando Valley. Analysis of processed data from several buildings in the San Fernando Valley indicates that short-period buildings such as shear-wall buildings experienced large forces and relatively low inter-story drift during the Northridge earthquake. However, long-period (1 to 5 sec) steel or concrete moment-frame buildings experienced large inter-story drift. For this earthquake, accelerations did not always amplify from base to roof for flexible structures like the moment-frame buildings, but the displacements were always larger at the roof. The drifts at many of the moment-frame buildings were larger than the drift limit for working stress design in the building code. The records from a base-isolated building indicate that high-frequency motion was reduced significantly by the isolators. The isolators deformed about 3.5 cm, which is much less than the design displacement. The records from a parking structure show important features of the seismic response of this class of structure.

This paper evaluates the accuracy of the Modified Fish-Bone (MFB) model for estimating the maximum inter-story drift ratio of irregular moment resisting frame (MRF) structures. To make this model applicable to irregular MRF structures, some modifications are made to the MFB formula. In order to evaluate the accuracy of the MFB model, several irregular frames with different types of irregularities are considered when subjected to different ground motions with different intensities. A local and a global error measure are defined and they are calculated for different frame models subjected to different earthquake records. The effects of different irregularities, ductility demand and frame height on the accuracy of the MFB model are investigated. Based on the results obtained from this evaluation, two simple and effective approaches are suggested to improve the MFB models.

High-rise buildings, as a result of rapid urbanization in China, become one of popular structure kind. However, there have been few seismic vulnerability studies on high-rise buildings, and few fragility curves have been developed for the buildings. Based on the published data of more than 50 high rises and super high rises, the structural information such as building heights, mode periods, locations and sites, the maximum design story drift ratios, are collected and analyzed. The vulnerability analysis for high rises uses response spectrum displacement as seismic ground motion input, since the structures have comparatively long natural period. Using statistics and regression analysis, the relationship between the maximum story drift ratio and response spectrum displacement is established. Based on height groups and earthquake design codes, the fragility curves of different performance levels can be developed. These curves can provide good loss estimation of high rise structural damage under earthquake ground motion.

Structural control systems, including passive, semi-active and active damping systems, are used to increase structural resilience to multi-hazard excitations. While semi-active and active damping systems have been investigated for the mitigation of multi-hazard excitations, their requirement for real-time controllers and power availability limit their usefulness. This work proposes the use of a newly developed passive variable friction device for the mitigation of multi-hazard events. This passive variable friction device, when installed in a structure, is capable of mitigating different hazards from wind and ground motions. In wind events, the device ensures serviceability, while during earthquake events, the device reduces the building’s inter-story drift to maintain strength-based motion requirements. Results show that the passive variable friction device performs better than a traditional friction damper during a seismic event while not compromising any performance during wind events.
