Abstract Most empirical formulas have been proposed to quantitatively evaluate local damage to reinforced concrete (RC) structures caused by a rigid projectile impact. These formulas have been derived from impact tests performed to the target structure with a normal angle, while only a few impact tests involving soft projectile to the target structure have been studied. Recently, we conducted a series of impact tests to evaluate local damage to RC panels subjected to normal and oblique impact due to rigid and soft projectiles. The final goal of our study is to establish a new formula for evaluating local damage to RC structures caused by oblique impact based on experimental and analytical investigation. This paper summarizes the results of experimental and analytical investigation on penetration damage mode to RC panels subjected to normal projectile impact. Through the comparison between experimental and analytical results, the analytical method is validated.

Many empirical formulas have been proposed for evaluating local damage to reinforced concrete (RC) structures caused by impacts of rigid missiles. Most of these formulas have been derived based on impact tests normal to the target structures. Up to now, few impact tests oblique to the target structures have been carried out. This study has been conducted with the purpose of proposing a new formula for evaluating the local damage caused by oblique impacts based on previous experimental and simulation results. In this paper, the results of simulation analyses for evaluating the local damage to a RC panel subjected to normal and oblique impacts by rigid and soft missiles, by using the simulation method that was validated using the results of previous impact experiments. Based on the results of these simulation analyses, the effects of the rigidity of the missile as well as the impact angle on the local damage to the target structures are clarified.

The aim of this study is to analytically assess the seismic performance of reinforced concrete (RC) columns with interlocking hoops using a novel damage index, and to provide data for developing next generation seismic design criteria. Seismic performance of RC columns is controlled by the level of confinement provided by transverse steel. Interlocking hoops are commonly used in RC columns because they can provide more effective confinement than rectangular hoops. Three RC interlocking columns were tested under a constant axial load and a cyclically reversed horizontal load. A computer program, RCAHEST (Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology), is used to analyze RC structures. Novel damage indices aim to provide a means of quantifying numerically the performance level in RC columns with interlocking hoops sustained under earthquake loading. The proposed numerical method for the seismic performance assessment of interlocking columns is verified by comparison with the experimental results.

AbstractIn this paper, three different damage indexes were used to detect nonlinear damages in two adjacent Reinforced Concrete (RC) structures considering pounding effects. 2-, 4- and 8-story benchmark RC Moment Resisting Frames (MRFs) were selected for this purpose with 60%, 75%, and 100% of minimum separation distance and also without any in-between separation gap. These structures were analyzed using the incremental dynamic analysis method under 44 far-field ground motion records. Comparison of the results between the MRFs with and without considering pounding effects show that collisions lead to a decrease in the values of coefficient of determination and the nonlinear damage occurs in lower seismic intensity. As a result, using the damage indexes, nonlinear damages can be detected during a specific seismic intensity. Moreover, considering a minimum separation distance leads to an increase in the coefficient of determination between the damage index and the maximum story drift ratio. Furthermore, due to pounding, shorter MRFs are damaged more significantly than the taller structures.

This paper shows the acoustic emission (AE) analysis recorded during the loading process of reinforced concrete (RC) structures subjected to bidirectional seismic loadings. Two waffle plates (bidirectional) supported by isolated square columns were tested on a shaking table with a progressive and increasing ground acceleration until the final collapse. Each specimen was subjected to a different loading history. A relevant delay in the beginning of the significant AE energy is observed as the peak value of the ground acceleration increases. Based on this result, a new AE temporal damage index (TDI), defined as the time difference between the onset of the significant AE activity and the onset of the loading that causes this AE activity, is proposed and validated by comparing it with the plastic strain energy released by the concrete, typically used as a reliable damage level indicator. Good agreement was observed for both specimens and seismic inputs.

Measurements by sensors provide inaccurate information, including external noises. This study considers a method to reduce the influence of the external noise, and it presents a method to detect local damage transforming the measured frequency response functions (FRFs) to reduce the influence of the external noise. This study is conducted by collecting the FRFs in the first resonance frequency range from the responses in the frequency domain, taking the mean values at two adjacent nodes, and transforming the results to the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD). A damage detection method is provided. The curvature of the proper orthogonal mode (POM) corresponding to the first proper orthogonal value (POV) is utilized as the damage index to indicate the damage region. A numerical experiment and a floor test of truss bridge illustrate the validity of the proposed method for damage detection.

. It is possible to quantify the damage to reinforced concrete members under cyclic loading through a nondimensional parameter known as a “damage index”. The damage index can be either a global damage index for the total structure, or a local damage index for the element level. In this paper, a new damage model termed “equivalent ductility damage model” has been suggested for evaluation of the damage index, which is consistent with accepted definitions of ductility. Substructure method was applied to verify the suggested new damage model. A total of 3 identical half-scale reinforced concrete columns were tested under variable amplitude cyclic loading up to the ultimate failure of the specimens. The imposed displacement histories were obtained from analytical simulations of the model column subjected to a series of earthquakes. Test observations indicate that the proposed model predicts 100 percent damage at the ultimate failure state of the element. The proposed damage index model can be extended to other structural elements, such as shear walls, beams, beam-column junctions, etc.
