A method is given for calculating the radial distribution of pressure in a steam turbine with long blades, the conditions for radial equilibrium, for continuity, and for energy balance being satisfied simultaneously. An example, illustrating the application of the method, shows that if there is pure impulse at the root of the blade, an appreciable degree of reaction may be reached at the outer end of the blade. It is shown that if the steam flow is to be parallel to the axis of the turbine then the variation of nozzle outlet angle with change of radius depends on the steam velocity at the inner radius. An alternative theoretical analysis of the problem is given which yields quickly the radial distribution of pressure where the nozzle outlet angle is uniform. This analysis is extended to give the degree of reaction at the blade tip in terms of that at the blade root. The paper concludes with a brief note showing that in geometrically similar turbines operating with the same blade speed, but different speeds of rotation, the radial distribution of pressure is the same.

A 5x5 partial fuel assembly was used for a comparative design evaluation test of a newly developed spacer grid from a mechanical/hydraulic vibration aspect. Axial flow pattern along this rod bundle in the test was very complex due to the intermediate spacers and the mixing vane; Understanding of this flow field of a dynamic pressure is a preliminary step for a theoretical analysis of a vibratory behavior of a partial fuel assembly. Since a fluctuating pressure induced by the randomly-varying flow turbulence cannot be accurately predicted by an analysis alone, it has to be measured directly on the surface over the rod or in an accessible vicinity of the bundle. In this study, the fluctuating pressure acting on a partial fuel assembly with a spacer grid and a mixing vane was measured. The measured PSD showed different spectral features from the results of the literatures and had a series of periodic pulsations with sidebands over the specific frequency ranges; it is believed that the periodic components in the PSD have to do with the design of the spacer grid and the mixing vane. And, the exciting force function for the theoretical analysis of a partial fuel assembly with spacers and a mixing vane was estimated as a possible PSD form.

The hydraulic excitation characteristics of axial flow pump unit are studied through theoretical analysis, numerical simulation and field test in this paper. The correlation between impeller hydraulic and radial vibration displacement of impeller centroid is obtained through theoretical analysis. Through the 1-way fluid-solid-interaction (FSI) numerical simulation, the distributions of water pressure and displacement on the impeller surface are obtained, and the time-domain and frequency-domain characteristics of transient hydraulic and radial displacement are revealed. Through the field test, the external characteristics of axial flow pump unit and the time-frequency characteristics of the pressure pulsation at the measuring points beside the inlet of the impeller are obtained. The comparisons between simulation results and experimental results show that the former is accurate and reliable.

This paper describes the results from an investigation of the gas-particle flow trajectories, velocities and pressure distribution in an axial flow turbine stage. A gas-particle flow cascade tunnel and high-speed photographic techniques were used to conduct the experimental investigation. The pressure distribution on the blade surface was measured and compared with the theoretical analysis, the results exhibiting good agreement between the developed theory and experiment.
