Coho salmon spawning peaked in the late fall. Spawning densities ranged from fewer than 5 coho salmon per hectare up to 90 fish per hectare. Subyearling coho salmon densities ranged from 10 to 60 fish per 100 m2 in June and dropped to 5–20 fish by early fall. Coho salmon fry increased in length from 40 mm in early May, to over 120 mm by smolt out-migration in the following April. Coho salmon instantaneous daily change in density coefficients ranged from 0.004 to 0.019 and were dependent on initial coho density. Daily coho salmon growth rates ranged from 0.38 to 0.60 mm per day and were not dependent on initial coho salmon density. Downstream movement of rainbow trout fry began in May, and continued into July. In the spring 10–20 yearlings and one to five 2-year-olds per 100 m2 were present. Most fry emerged in June at a size of 25 mm and grew to 85 mm by fall. Daily growth rates varied from 0.23 to 0.45 mm per day for yearling rainbow trout and were not correlated with rainbow trout density.

During May and June 1966, the migration of pink salmon fry from the Bella Coola River was studied in Burke Channel, British Columbia. The movement of pink fry down Burke Channel was saltatory. Short periods of active migration were interspersed with longer periods when the fry did not migrate and accumulated in bays. Fry were sampled from these accumulations and their ability to orient using celestial cues was examined. During the early morning, fry tended to prefer directions at right angles to their direction of migration, but at other times of the day preferred the direction of migration. The preference for the direction of migration was strongest at midday. Fry were better oriented on clear days than on cloudy days. These data indicate that fry may use celestial cues to find directions during their oceanic migrations.

We tested whether one generation of state-of-the-art hatchery culture influenced the vulnerability of Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) fry to predators. Size-matched hatchery and wild origin spring Chinook salmon fry were exposed to rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and torrent sculpin (Cottus rhotheus) predators in 10.8 m3 net pens. The hatchery origin fry were the offspring of first generation hatchery-reared broodstock, and the wild origin fry had no history of hatchery culture; both originated from the same stock. Wild origin fry were found to have a 2.2% (p = 0.016) survival advantage over hatchery origin fry during 2 years of predation challenges. The most important findings of this study are (i) domestication can affect the susceptibility to predators after only one generation of state-of-the-art hatchery culture practices, and (ii) the domestication effect was very small.
