AbstractSouth Africa's churches grew or declined so quickly in the years after 1960 that by 1991 the country's religious map had been redrawn. This article charts and offers explanations for such developments. Almost all Christian churches grew substantially in the first half of the twentieth century but mainline churches were dominant. They continued to grow numerically into the 1960s and 1970s, but were beginning to shrink as a proportion of the expanding population. By contrast, Roman Catholic, African Independent and smaller independent denominations were growing quickly. By the 1990s, mainline Protestant churches were suffering considerable decline and Roman Catholicism's growth had stalled. African Independent and other churches continued to grow rapidly. A matrix of forces help to explain this phenomenon-including the political situation, socio-economic pressures, secularisation and particular religious factors. A comparative perspective shows South Africa's churches to have much in common with African and global trends.

In its simplest description, a tumor is comprised of an expanding population of transformed cells supported by a surrounding microenvironment termed the tumor stroma. The tumor microcroenvironment has a very complex composition, including multiple types of stromal cells, a dense network of various extracellular matrix (ECM) fibers interpenetrated by the interstitial fluid and gradients of several chemical species that either are dissolved in the fluid or are bound to the ECM structure. In order to study experimentally such complex interactions between multiple players, cancer is dissected and considered at different scales of complexity, such as protein interactions, biochemical pathways, cellular functions or whole organism studies. However, the integration of information acquired from these studies into a common description is as difficult as the disease itself. Computational models of cancer can provide cancer researchers with invaluable tools that are capable of integrating the complexity into organizing principles as well as suggesting testable hypotheses. We will focus in this Minireview on mathematical models in which the whole cell is a main modeling unit. We will present a current stage of such cell-focused mathematical modeling incorporating different stromal components and their interactions with growing tumors, and discuss what modeling approaches can be undertaken to complement the in vivo and in vitro experimentation.

Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is the most common and a cost-effective surgical remediation for older adults with long-standing osteoarthritis. In parallel with the expanding population of older adults, the number of TKAs performed annually is projected to be 3.48 million by 2030. During this surgery, a tourniquet is used to stop blood flow to the operative leg. However, the molecular pathways that are affected by tourniquet use during TKA continue to be elucidated. We hypothesized that components of the catabolic FoxO3a (i.e., MuRF1, MAFbx, and Bnip3) pathway, as well as the cellular stress pathways [i.e., stress-activated protein kinase (SAPK)/JNK and MAPKs], are upregulated during TKA. The purpose of this study was to measure changes in transcripts and proteins involved in muscle cell catabolic and stress-activated pathways. We obtained muscle biopsies from subjects, 70 ± 1.3 yr, during TKA, from the vastus lateralis at baseline (before tourniquet inflation), during maximal ischemia (just before tourniquet release), and during reperfusion. Total tourniquet time was 43 ± 2 min and reperfusion time was 16 ± 1. Significant increases in FoxO3a downstream targets, MAFbx and MuRF1, were present for mRNA levels during ischemia (MAFbx, P = 0.04; MuRF1, P = 0.04), and protein expression during ischemia (MAFbx, P = 0.002; MuRF1, P = 0.001) and reperfusion (MuRF1, P = 0.002). Additionally, stress-activated JNK gene expression ( P = 0.01) and protein were elevated during ischemia ( P = 0.001). The results of this study support our hypothesis that protein degradation pathways are stimulated during TKA. Muscle protein catabolism is likely to play a role in the rapid loss of muscle volume measured within 2 wk of this surgery.

The feeding habits of spirlin Alburnoides bipunctatus were investigated in a tributary of the River Vistula (Poland). To evaluate size-related patterns of resource use, fish were assigned to three size classes, defined according to size at first maturation: small (29–70-mm total length, TL), medium (71–90mm TL) and large (91–104mm TL). There was a significant ontogenetic shift in the feeding pattern among size classes, marked by differences in the proportion of the main taxonomic groups of prey consumed: small spirlin primarily consumed chironomid larvae, whereas medium and large spirlin showed a preference for Coleoptera, Ephemeroptera and imagines of unidentified insects. The proportion of prey taken from the water column was significantly lower for small- than medium- and large-sized spirlin. This difference was attributed to the benthic habits of small spirlin compared with medium and large spirlin. The shift to open water feeding in spirlin corresponded with sexual maturation, with habitat segregation between the smallest size class (comprising juveniles) and larger size classes (mature individuals). Size-specific changes in the diet composition of this species have not previously been documented.
