Cognitive radio (CR) is a new technology introduced to deal with the issues of spectrum scarcity and underutilization. Since the spectrum is limited, the unlicensed secondary users (CR users) opportunistically access the underutilized spectrum allocated to the licensed primary users (PUs) of the network. This chapter first gives a brief overview on spectrum sensing and its impact on the system throughput in a cognitive radio network. Later, cooperative relays are introduced in the network to improve spectrum efficiency and mitigate interference to PU. A detailed analysis of power allocation is demonstrated where the transmit power of CR is kept within such limit so that it can maintain low interference to PU. This optimal power allocation can achieve high throughput, which is also presented in this chapter.

Abstract Efficient bandwidth utilization is significant in new communication systems where secondary users can be used besides of primary users considering interference issues and idle state of primary users. Using secondary users as relays to transmit their own signals in addition to the primary signals can be applied for more reliability of the system where opportunistic relay selection can significantly enhance the performance of the system. The best-condition secondary user is selected as the optimum relay for retransmission of primary/secondary signal. Outage probability is analyzed in this paper based on decode and forward techniques in secondary users while the closed-form statement for outage probability is provided and verified by numerical evaluations.

The Impact

In this paper, we consider a novel cooperative underlay cognitive radio network based on non-orthogonal multiple access (CR-NOMA) with adaptive relay selection and power allocation. In secondary networks, dedicated relay assistance and user assistance are used to achieve communication between the base station and the far (and near) user. Here, a two-stage adaptive relay selection and power allocation strategy is proposed to maximize the achievable data rate of the far user while ensuring the service quality of near user. Furthermore, the closed-form expressions of outage probability of two secondary users are derived, respectively, under interference power constraints, revealing the impact of transmit power, number of relays, interference threshold and target data rate on system outage probability. Numerical results and simulations validate the advantages of the established cooperation and show that the proposed adaptive relay selection and power allocation strategy has better outage performance.
