A floating emissive probe has been used to obtain the spatial electron temperature (Te) profile in a 13.56 MHz parallel plate capacitive coupled plasma. The effect of an external transverse magnetic field and pressure on the electron temperature profile has been discussed. In the un-magnetised case, the bulk region of the plasma has a uniform Te. Upon application of the magnetic field, the Te profile becomes non-uniform and skewed.  With increase in pressure, there is an overall reduction in electron temperature. The regions adjacent to the electrodes witnessed a higher temperature than the bulk for both cases. The emissive probe results have also been compared with particle-in-cell simulation results for the un-magnetised case.

Abstract. Recent observations from satellites crossing regions of magnetic-field-aligned electron streams reveal solitary potential structures that move at speeds much greater than the ion acoustic/thermal velocity. The structures appear as positive potential pulses rapidly drifting along the magnetic field, and are electrostatic in their rest frame. We interpret them as BGK electron holes supported by a drifting population of trapped electrons. Using Laplace transforms, we analyse the behavior of one phase-space electron hole. The resulting potential shapes and electron distribution functions are self-consistent and compatible with the field and particle data associated with the observed pulses. In particular, the spatial width increases with increasing amplitude. The stability of the analytic solution is tested by means of a two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation code with open boundaries. We consider a strongly magnetized parameter regime in which the bounce frequency of the trapped electrons is much less than their gyrofrequency. Our investigation includes the influence of the ions, which in the frame of the hole appear as an incident beam, and impinge on the BGK potential with considerable energy. The nonlinear structure is remarkably resilient

The formation and propagation of ion phase-space vortices are observed in a numerical particle-in-cell simulation in two spatial dimensions and with three velocity components. The code allows for an externally applied magnetic field. The electrons are assumed to be isothermally Boltzmann-distributed at all times, implying that Poisson's equation becomes nonlinear for the present problem. Ion phase-space vortices are formed by the nonlinear saturation of the ion-ion two-stream instability, excited by injecting an ion beam at the plasma boundary. We consider the effect of a finite beam diameter and a magnetic field, in particular. A vortex instability is observed, appearing as a transverse modulation, which slowly increases with time and ultimately breaks up the vortex. When many vortices are present at the same time, we find that it is their interaction that eventually leads to a gradual filling-up of the phase-space structures. The ion phase-space vortices have a finite lifetime, which is noticeably shorter than that found in one-dimensional simulations. An externally imposed magnetic field can increase this lifetime considerably. For high injected beam velocities in magnetized plasmas, we observe the excitation of electrostatic ion-cyclotron instabilities, but see no associated formation of ion phase-space vortices. The results are relevant, for instance, for the interpretation of observations by instrumented spacecraft in the Earth's ionosphere and magnetosphere.

AbstractA two-layer target irradiated by an intense laser to generate strong interface magnetic field is proposed. The mechanism is analyzed through a simply physical model and investigated by two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation. The effect of laser intensity on the resulting magnetic field strength is also studied. It is found that the magnetic field can reach up to several ten megagauss for laser intensity at 1019 Wcm−2.

The Particle-in-Cell (PIC) method was used to study heat flux mitigation experiments with argon. In the experiment it was shown that a magnetic field allows to reduce the heat flux towards a target. PIC is well-suited for plasma simulation, giving the chance to get a better basic understanding of the underlying physics. The simulation demonstrates the importance of a self-consistent neutral-plasma description to understand the effect of heat flux reduction.

In this letter, we show that the Faraday rotation effect of the strong spontaneous magnetic field generated by the focus of a short-pulse, high-power laser interacting with a solid target may blur out the distinction between the s and p polarization of the incident laser. This in effect leads to the result that the harmonic yield ratio between p and s polarization is not as large as a PIC (particle-in-cell) simulation predicted. An approximate calculation of the harmonic yield ratio versus the magnetic field is carried out and the result is in relatively good agreement with the observations by Norreys et al. PACS Nos.: 42.90, 78.90
