The development of bis(diimine)copper(i) complexes as dyes in dye-sensitized solar cells is described. We assess the progress made in terms of light-harvesting and overall photoconversion efficiencies, and highlight areas that remain ripe for development and improvement, and the advantages of copper dyes over conventional ruthenium dyes.

AbstractNew materials and structures have been developed for efficient organic solar cells, dye-sensitized solar cells (DCSs) and organic thin-film solar cells (OPVs). Some strategies for achieving high photon-to-electricity conversion efficiency in these solar cells are discussed, focusing on nanostructured materials. In the case of DSCs, unlike TiO2 nanoparticles, TiO2 nanotubes with suitable dimensions are expected to work as efficient light scatterers as well as to give large surface areas for charge separation. A strategy for designing triarylamine-functionalized ruthenium dyes, which display the high efficiency, is also proposed. Furthermore, OPVs based on donor/acceptor (D/A) block copolymers are discussed, focusing on the phase separation of donor and acceptor segments and their domain sizes.

AbstractAn efficient synthesis of multidentate polypyridine ligands, 3,5-bis(2,2′-bipyridin-4-ylethynyl)benzoic acid and 3,5-bis(2,5-bis(2-pyridyl)-pyridin-4-ylethynyl)benzoic acid, with potential application in the production of ruthenium dyes for dye-sensitised solar cells was developed. Isolation of intermediate products and final compounds is simple and the yields are very high. The ligands obtained can be used in the synthesis of dendritic analogues of well known and very efficient N3 dye and “black dye”.
