This review summarizes the recent achievements in the development of photonic functional materials based on cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and CNC templating. The unique self-assembly of CNCs into chiral nematic structures introduces photonic properties for the development of functional materials with application potential in photonic sensing, tunable reflectors or optoelectronics.

Abstract In this work, we studied the multilayer adsorption of cellulose nanocrystals and cellulose nanofibers with other polysaccharides such as xyloglucan and chitosan. We showed that the specific interactions between these biopolymers can be exploited to prepare three-dimensional functional materials. Quartz crystal microbalance studies showed that both biopolymers were adsorbed irreversibly on the nanocellulose surfaces. In aqueous media, the maximum amount of adsorbed polymer was higher for the smaller and more crystalline cellulose nanocrystals, compared to cellulose nanofibers. For both nanocelluloses employed, the amount of xyloglucan of the first bilayer was larger than the amount of chitosan adsorbed. Ellipsometry showed that both xyloglucan and chitosan were adsorbed on nanocellulose surfaces. However, at the second layer no mass change was detected by quartz crystal microbalance when xyloglucan was added, while for addition of successive layers of chitosan a decrease of frequency was detected. The water uptake of multilayers was higher for cellulose nanocrystals than for nanofibers, which was ascribed the presence of voids in the nanocrystal layer. Finally, we demonstrated that multilayer adsorption of these biopolymers can be performed on calcium carbonate sacrificial templates, which can then be removed to yield hollow polysaccharide microcapsules.

Wide use of bio-based polymers could play a key role in facilitating a more sustainable society because such polymers are renewable and ecofriendly. Cellulose is a representative bio-based polymer and has been used in various materials. To further expand the application of cellulose, it is crucial to develop functional materials utilizing cellulosic physicochemical properties that are acknowledged but insufficiently applied. Cellulose derivatives and cellulose nanocrystals exhibit a cholesteric liquid crystal (ChLC) property based on rigidity and chirality, and this property is promising for constructing next-generation functional materials. The form of such materials is an important factor because material form is closely related with function. To date, researchers have reported cellulosic ChLC materials with a wide range of material forms—such as films, gels, mesoporous materials, and emulsions—for diverse functions. We first briefly review the fundamental aspects of cellulosic ChLCs. Then we comprehensively review research on cellulosic ChLC functional materials in terms of their material forms. Thus, this review provides insights into the creation of novel cellulosic ChLC functional materials based on material form designed toward the expanded application of cellulosics.

Layered materials draw attention in recent years in response to the world-wide drive to discover new functional materials. High-Tc superconducting oxide is one example. Internal interfaces in such layered materials differ significantly from those of cubic metals. They are often parallel to the layer of the neighboring crystals in sintered samples(layer plane boundary), while periodically ordered interfaces with the two neighboring crystals in mirror symmetry to each other are relatively rare. Consequently, the atomistic features of the interface differ significantly from those of cubic metals. In this paper grain boundaries in sintered high-Tc superconducting oxides, joined interfaces between engineering ceramics with metals, and polytype interfaces in vapor-deposited bicrystal are examined to collect atomic information of the interfaces in layered materials. The analysis proved that they are not neccessarily more complicated than that of simple grain boundaries in cubic metals. The interfaces are majorly layer plane type which is parallel to the compound layer. Secondly, chemical information is often available, which helps the interpretation of the interface atomic structure.

Energy harvesting methods that use functional materials have attracted interest because they can take advantage of an abundant but underutilized energy source. Most vibration energy harvester designs operate most effectively around their resonant frequency. However, in practice, the frequency band for ambient vibrational energy is typically broad. The development of technologies for broadband energy harvesting is therefore desirable. The authors previously proposed an energy harvester, called a flexible piezoelectric device (FPED), that consists of a piezoelectric film (polyvinylidene difluoride) and a soft material, such as silicon rubber or polyethylene terephthalate. The authors also proposed a system based on FPEDs for broadband energy harvesting. The system consisted of cantilevered FPEDs, with each FPED connected via a spring. Simply supported FPEDs also have potential for broadband energy harvesting, and here, a theoretical evaluation method is proposed for such a system. Experiments are conducted to validate the derived model.
