Industrial history is full of events related to scale-up challenges. Failure at the scale-up stage is no longer surprising. Engineers and scientists have been trying to gather all the key parameters for decades, but, unfortunately, there are still no exact and well-established rules ensuring an accurate transition from one scale to another. Even the minimum lab-scale fluidized bed is still undefined.In this work, the effect of bed diameter on gas-solid behavior is investigated in three fluidized beds, 152mm, 78mm, and 50mm in diameter, in which the conventional scale-up rules are respected. The experiments were carried out using sand and alumina particles.The results were obtained and confirmed using fiber optic techniques and radioactive particle tracking, respectively. The results show that radial solid hold-up behavior on a small bed diameter scale is completely different from that on the intermediate bed diameter scale. The radial profile of solid hold-up on a small and very small bed diameter indicates an increase from a low value near the wall to a high value at the center at different heights from the distributor. By contrast, the opposite profile is observed on the intermediate bed diameter, similar to what is usually reported in the literature.

Currently, various industrial processes are carried out in fluidized bed reactors, such as fermentation, water treatment, and algae growth. Knowing its internal dynamics is fundamental for the intensification of these processes. This work assesses the motion of fluidized calcium alginate spheres under the influence of an upward fluid flow within a 1.2 m high and 0.1 m inner diameter acrylic column. The Radioactive Particle Tracking technique is a proper methodology to study the internal dynamics of these kinds of equipment. Liquid-Solid Fluidized Bed is compared with the Gas-Liquid-Solid Fluidized Bed operation mode in terms of mixing behavior. Data gathered is analyzed in view of Shannon entropy as a dynamic mixing measure. Mixing times are found to be of the same order of magnitude. However, the Liquid-Solid Fluidized Bed achieves a lower homogenization degree. Also, we found good agreement between two criteria for assessing stability for the mixed state: the Shannon Entropy time-series plateau and the Glansdorff-Prigogine criterion based on Fisher information.

The liquid–solid fluidized bed was compared with a gas–liquid–solid fluidized bed operation mode in terms of mixing behavior. The radioactive particle tracking technique is a proper methodology to study the internal dynamics of these kinds of equipment. Data gathered were analyzed with Shannon entropy as a dynamic mixing measure. Mixing times were found to be between 1 and 2.5 seconds for both fluidization modes. The liquid–solid fluidized bed presents a rather smooth mixing time profile along the column. On the other hand, the gas–liquid–solid fluidized bed showed high sensitivity of entropy production with height, reaching a sharp tendency break at the second quartile of the column. The Glansdorff–Prigogine stability measure can accurately capture flow regime transitions of the gas–liquid–solid fluidized bed, allowing it to be used to construct reliable operative windows for fluidization equipment.
