From the endemic Cuban species Rauvolfia salicifolia GRISEB nine alkaloids were isolated of which the following seven had been already described: (+)-ajmalidine (I), (-)-reserpiline (II), (-)-isoreserpiline (III), (-)-isocarapanaubine (IV), (-)-ajmalicine (V), (+)-vellosimine (VI), and (+)-yohimbine (VII). The structure of (-)-raucubaine (VIII) had been previously determined by X-ray diffraction and the structure of the alkaloid (-)-raucubainine (IX) was suggested on the basis of its conversion to (-)-raucubaine (VIII). The absolute configuration of (-)-raucubaine and (-)-raucubainine was elucidated by CD spectroscopy.

The stems of Bursera multijuga afforded (-)-(1 S,3 E,7 R,8 R,11 E)-7,8-epoxycembra-3,11-dien-1-ol (1) and its acetate 2, together with cembrene A (3), nephthenol (4), and cembrenol (5). The structures of 1 and 2 were elucidated by 1D and 2D NMR, HRESIMS, and X-ray diffraction. The conformational preference of flexible 1 was studied by molecular modeling at the DFT B3LYP/DGDZVP level of theory. Good agreement between calculated and experimental vibrational circular dichroism curves established the absolute configuration of 1. This is the first time that cembrane derivatives have been isolated from the genus Bursera.

A new cytotoxic thiodepsipeptide, verrucosamide (1), was isolated along with the known, related cyclic peptide thiocoraline, from the extract of a marine-derived actinomycete, a Verrucosispora sp., our strain CNX-026. The new peptide, which is composed of two rare seven-membered 1,4-thiazepane rings, was elucidated by a combination of spectral methods and the absolute configuration was determined by a single X-ray diffraction study. Verrucosamide (1) showed moderate cytotoxicity and selectivity in the NCI 60 cell line bioassay. The most susceptible cell lines were MDA-MB-468 breast carcinoma with an LD50 of 1.26 µM, and COLO 205 colon adenocarcinoma with an LD50 of 1.4 µM. Also isolated along with verrucosamide were three small 3-hydroxy(alkoxy)-quinaldic acid derivatives that appear to be products of the same biosynthetic pathway.

Dissymmetry of the photoproduct was induced by using a chiral substituent, (S)-methylphenylalanine, in the title compound {N-4-(2,4,6-triisopropylbenzoyl)benzoyl]-(S)-phenylalanine methyl ester (I)}. On irradiation with light from a 250 W ultra-high-pressure Hg lamp for 7 h through a long-pass filter, the photoreaction in a crystal was 100% complete without the loss of crystallinity. The crystal structures (I), before, and (II) {N-[4-(7-hydroxy-3,5-diisopropyl-8,8-dimethylbicyclo[4.2.0]octa-1,3,5-trien-7-yl)benzoyl]-(S)-phenylalanine methyl ester}, after photocyclization, have been determined by X-ray diffraction. For comparison, a crystal structure analysis has also been carried out for the photoproduct (III) of the 3′-COOMe derivative after recrystallization {methyl 3-(7-hydroxy-3,5-diisopropyl-8,8-dimethylbicyclo[4.2.0]octa-1,3,5-trien-7-yl)benzoate}. The dihedral angle between the central carbonyl plane and the triisopropylphenyl ring deviates from 90° by 10 (1)° in (I), which makes an imbalance in the intramolecular O(carbonyl)...H(methine) distances of the isopropyl groups at positions 2 and 6. The crystal structure of (II) indicates that the nearer methine H was predominantly abstracted by the carbonyl O atom in the reaction. The absolute configuration around the asymmetric C atom in the cyclobutenol ring of the product is S.

Fe-Cr/Al2O3 metal-ceramic composites prepared by hydrogen reduction at different temperatures and for different periods have been investigated by a combined use of Mössbauer spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy in order to obtain information on the nature of the metallic species formed. Total reduction of Fe3+ does not occur by increasing the reduction time at 1320 K from 1 to 30 h, and the amount of superparamagnetic metallic species is essentially constant (about 10%). Temperatures higher than 1470 K are needed to achieve nearly total reduction of substitutional Fe3+. Interestingly, iron favors the reduction of chromium. The composition of the Fe-Cr particles is strongly dependent on their size, the Cr content being higher in particles smaller than 10 nm.
