A facile EDTA-2Na assisted hydrothermal route was developed for hierarchical γ-BaB2O4 hollow microspheres self-assembled from nanorods, with excellent thermostability and satisfactory performance for the removal of Pb2+ ions from mimic waste water.

We report on recent advances in liquid phase epitaxial (LPE) conversion of a bulk Si wafer into self standing 3C-SiC. This includes the role of the stress control within the (100) oriented “crucibles”, the elaboration of crack-free (111) “crucibles” and the successful conversion of (100) and (111) oriented Si wafer. To date up to 100µm thick 3C-SiC(100) as well as 30µm thick crack-free 3C-SiC (111) materials have been obtained. The growth rate ranges from 20 to 100µm/h and locally can even reach ~1mm/h. In this work we focus on the structural, morphological and optical properties of the LPE-grown material.

We have shown that various Zinc porphyrin-based nanostructures can be easily synthesized by a surfactant-assisted self-assembly method, where nonionic, anionic and cationic surfactants are employed. It was found that tuning the type of surfactant offered an alternative to promote the formation of Zinc porphyrin nanostructure with different morphologies in aqueous solutions. As-prepared nano-scale self-assemblies, including disc-shaped, ellipsoid, square and quadrangular pyramidal nanoparticles, were investigated in solution via UV/vis, fluorescence spectroscopy and SEM microscopy. The different UV/vis as well as fluorescent spectra between nano-porphyrin and its monomer further conformed that the nano-crystallization of porphyrin would result in novel optical properties differing from the single subunits.

Nanocrystalline Cd1-XZnXS (X=0.0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.8 and 1.0) were synthesized by simple wet chemical method via co-precipitation. The formation, phase purity and crystalline size were ascertained by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The shape and surface morphology of the synthesized samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The optical properties of the Cd1-XZnXS samples were investigated using UV-vis absorption spectroscopy and photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL) studies. The optical properties of the sample was dramatically changed by varying the composition of Cd1-XZnXS system, which may be due to the synergic effect originated by combining CdS and ZnS. The obtained optical behaviors suggest that the material can be suitable for the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants. The prsent investigation demontrated that the synthetic approach developed in this is highly reproducible and can be readily scaled up for potential industrial production.

Structural and optical properties of surfactant-assisted SiO2-TiO2 hybrid matrix as a highly responsive optical sensing material by sol-gel method are investigated. Microscopic results indicate the uniform morphology with large pores without any cracks. Matrices have a high surface area (489–342 m2/g), which has more capability to sense the broader pH range. From UV–visible spectroscopy, it is found that after encapsulation, matrix has ~ 78 % optical transparency with low refractive index of 1.44 corresponding to thickness 138.7 nm. Sensing analysis revealed that the prepared coating has good sensitivity at pH 12 and fast response time. Low refractive index and highly porous matrix, combined for achieving a good responsive optical chemical sensors. This research also opens an aveanue for ths material to be considered as a functional coating.
