AbstractAn oxidant- and metal-free photoelectrocatalytic C–H alkylation reaction of heteroarenes with alkyl oxalates has been developed. Several classes of heteroaromatics, such as quinolines, isoquinolines, pyridines, and phenanthridines, can be alkylated with tertiary or secondary alkyl oxalates. The photoelectrochemical synthesis employs 2,4,5,6-tetra-9H-carbazol-9-ylisophthalonitrile as a molecular catalyst and allows the oxidative transformations to proceed through evolution of hydrogen without a sacrificial chemical oxidant.

Carbenoid-based N–H insertions have undergone significant development with respect to C–N bond formation in recent years. However, the existing methods suffer from unstable starting materials, expensive metal catalysts and organic solvents. Herein, insertion of sulfoxonium ylides into arylamines under metal-free conditions has been developed. The method employs water as solvent at mild temperature and is amenable to the late-stage modification of structurally complex bioactive compounds.

Here we report a facile and efficient triphosgene-assisted one-pot conversion of aldehydes/ketones into nitriles/amides. The triphosgene, a kind of phosgene alternative, containing both ester linkage and chloromethyl units, easily reacts with oximes for the preparation of nitriles/amides. However, the reaction of oximes with triphosgene can’t fully convert corresponding nitriles/amides due to hydrolysis of oximes to aldehydes or ketones. Our protocol tandem proceeds smoothly without the use of organic base and metal catalysts. Diverse functionalized aromatic, aliphatic, and allylic aldehydes/ketones incorporating biomass-derived platform compounds were successfully converted to nitriles and amides in excellent yields. Compared to step-by-step reaction, this tandem strategy is characterized by multi-step reaction in one pot, mild reaction conditions, and fewer by-products.

A Brønsted acid-catalyzed domino ring-opening cyclization transformation of donor-acceptor (D-A) cyclopropanes and 2-naphthols has been developed. This formal [3+2] cyclization reaction provided novel and efficient access to the naphthalene-fused cyclopentanes in the absence of any transition-metal catalysts or additives. This robust procedure was completed smoothly on a gram-scale to afford the corresponding product with comparable efficiency. Furthermore, the synthetic application of the prepared product has been demonstrated by its transformation into a variety of synthetically useful molecules.
