A novel corrosion-resistant steel with high boron content is investigated in this paper. Three stages during crystallisation of the steel are revealed. The positive influence of Zr addition on the microstructure and mechanical properties after hot deformation is shown. The Zr-alloyed steel demonstrates hot deformation without fracturing in the temperature range of 1273–1423 K, and in the strain rate range of 0.1–10 s−1, despite the high volume of brittle borides. The processes of ferrite recrystallisation and boride structure fragmentation occur during hot deformation, promoting the appearance of a peak on stress–strain curves.

ABSTRACTDuring melt-growth of macroscopically dislocation free bulk silicon crystals (floating-zone and Czochralski technique) microdefects can form due to the condensation of thermal point defects (self-interstitials, vacancies). The formation of these imperfections, generally referred to as “swirl defects”, is strongly affected by the growth conditions (e.g. the crystal pulling rate) and crystal purity. The various reported defect formation models will be discussed. Special attention will be paid to the effect of doping on swirl defect formation.

Two porphyrins of high boron content (OCP and HCP–PEG) were prepared in high yields from the reaction of the corresponding tri- and tetra-(dihydroxyphenyl)porphyrins with zwitterionic cobaltabisdicarbollide [3,3′-Co(8-C4H8O2-1,2-C2B9H10)(1′,2′-C2B9H11)] . Both porphyrins were found to have low cytotoxicity toward human HEp2 cells, and to localize subcellularly mainly in the cell lysosomes. Animal toxicity investigations using male and female BALB/c mice also revealed low toxicity for both compounds. The determined maximum tolerated dose (MTD) for these boronated porphyrins administered intraperitoneally were 160 mg/kg for OCP and 320 mg/kg for HCP–PEG. Our studies warrant further development of these porphyrins of high boron content, and in particular of HCP–PEG, as boron delivery vehicles for BNCT.
