Specific heat and thermal expansion measurements have been performed on Nd1−xLUxMn2 in the temperature range between 1.5K and 300K. Below 10K, anomalies are observed which are ascribed to a spin reorientation of the Nd sublattice. These anomalies are only slightly affected by the substitution of Nd by Lu. Large effects, however, are observed on the magnetic properties of the Mn sublattice. The antiferromagnetic order disappears for x exceeding 0.30. The data are analysed in terms of Grüneisen parameters. In the paramagnetic compound LuMn2, a spin-fluctuation contribution to the thermodynamic properties is observed. In the Nd-containing compounds, distinct contributions from the crystal field acting on the Nd ions can be distinguished. The variation of the magnetic properties of the Mn sublattice with the concentration of Lu is discussed.

The magnetic properties of chromium�based alloys with the transition metals are very varied. Below room temperature it is believed that chromium is antiferrcmagnetic and in this paper we investigate briefly the nature of the influence of this antiferrcmagnetic matrix on the properties of dilute solutions of atoms carrying weIl�defined local moments of their own. It is shown that various anomalies in the susceptibility-temperature relations can be rationalized in terms of a model involving small spin orientation forces arising from the antiferromagnetism. Alloying with vanadium appears to reduce the spin moment on the chromium atoms, but to introduce no localized spins itself. The temperature.independent contribution of cobalt in solution is interpreted in terms of local spins locked by the antiferromagnetism of the matrix. The :results so far obtained suggest that careful specific heat measurements in the range 0--100 OK may disclose very significant anomalies in many of. these alloys.

Particularities in the specific heat of UPd 2 Al 3, a λ-type of peak with a maximum at 14.5 K and a Schottky-type of peak with a broad maximum at 55 K, has been attributed to the 5f-subsystem of the U atoms. The U-5f contribution has been found to be described surprisingly well within a single-ion Hamiltonian that includes the charge multipolar (CMP) interactions and the antiferromagnetic (AF) exchange interaction between the U 3+ ions. The AF exchange parameter and the full set of the CMP parameters associated with the hexagonal symmetry have been evaluated. The energy-level scheme (ELS) of this Kramers ion is constructed. The ground-state function Γ8 of the 5f 3 electrons is highly anisotropic. This state results from higher-order charge multipolar interactions. Magnetic properties resulting from this scheme including the metamagnetic-like transition at 18 T, the strongly-reduced value for the U-ion moment and its field dependence are found to be in good agreement with experimental observations.

We report here normal and superconducting properties of ABa 2 Cu 3 O 7−δ (with A=Y, Gd, Dy, and Er) and of Fe doped YBa2Cu3O7−δ . Results from X-ray powder diffraction, electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, ESR, and specific heat measurements are presented, leading to a characterization of the magnetic properties of these materials. The effect of structural modifications of the lattice on the superconducting properties and the relative insensitivity of Tc to the presence of magnetic moments is discussed.

Abstract The cerium plumbides CeCuPb, CePdPb, CeAgPb, and CeAuPb have been synthesized from the elements in sealed tantalum tubes in a high-frequency furnace followed by annealing. The copper, silver and gold compounds crystallize with the NdPtSb-type structure, space group P63mc: a = 466.1(2), c = 778.1(3) pm for CeCuPb, a = 484.8(2), c = 773.0(3) pm for CeAgPb, and a = 480.24(9), c = 772.9(2) pm for CeAuPb. CePdPb crystallizes with the ZrNiAl-type structure: P6̅2m, a = 775.0(2), c = 413.32(8) pm. The dc susceptibility measurements show trivalent cerium for all four plumbides with experimental magnetic moments of 2.53(2), 2.71(2), 2.63(2), and 2.58(2) μB/Ce atom for CeCuPb, CePdPb, CeAgPb, and CeAuPb, respectively. The compounds CeCuPb, CeAgPb, and CeAuPb, studied by dc susceptibility and specific heat measurements, order antiferromagnetically at N´eel temperatures of 8.2(1), 7.4(1), and 3.7(1) K, respectively.
